Trading in car with only 1 key?

has anyone done this, does the dealer usually try to tell you they have to take $250 or something like that off the trade in ammount?

My wife and I spent 3 hours last night searching our house for the extra key for our Land Rover LR2 and couldn't find it, haven't seen it in 6+ months for that matter.

Do you guys think the dealer will try to depreciate our trade in because of it (deal already in place for the X3 and trade in)? My wife already told me if he does she will walk away from the deal (pretty frustrating when you have been waiting 3 weeks for your new car). I would like to go into the dealer tonight with some knowledge on the subject from Bimmerpost members...

I would figure 2 fully functional keys+remotes and the title would be expected by the dealer - but how they handle this in your case I have no personal experience.

One thing you definately should do - get the price on a replacement key on the LR2 and know that price - to be sure they don't hit you for more than that.

I hope your wife doesn't hold her ground on this one - would hate to see you start over.

I think the retail price on the key is about $150 plus they normally charge $100 for "reprogramming" of it. BUT this dealership also owns a Land Rover dealer, so their actual cost is probably $50 or less... So I think I will go with my wife on this, if they want to lose the sale of a $55K car because of a $50 cost to the dealership, thats fine, we can walk

trade it in, give 'em one key, and that's it. don't even mention it. I am sure they already gave you a value for your trade. screw it. threaten to walk from the deal. I am sure the dealer and your sales guy won't scrap the whole car deal over one key.

Got it today. Told him I only had one and it wasn't an issue. Guess they know better than to make it an issue.

Transaction went great. Car blows away our old LR2. Looks better than expected and drives great (again compared to the land rover)

Mako, congrats and we are going to need pics and a review

most new cars drive better than a LR2 (my wife had one)
