UK Winter wheel/tyre sets

Hi all

Has anyone in the UK researched winter wheel/tyre sets ?

I've called a few dealers and I'm being offered style 307 18" alloys with Pirelli winter run flats for £1800 all in. 17"s are a bit less.

Anyone seen any better deals ? (Including the alloys)

Cheers
MS

Yes. Researched since buying late January this year and just bought the exact set you were looking at except I got £100 off, so were £1700 in total.

Interesting thanks ..... I didn't push for any discounts at this stage but was offered a winter check and the first two changeovers/storage free from one dealer.

Sorry to say I went the budget route for winter wheels. Bought some good condition second hand 17" X3 1st Gen alloys for £160 off ebay. Then bought 4 light used Dunlop Winter M3 second hand tyres for £200 off ebay (incl. fitted to the wheels).
Helped that I was travelling to Birmingham with work so could drop off the wheels and pick them up after work.
So ~£360 all in.

Keep your eye on ebay, there are some excellent condition 18" wheels around, then just buy new tyres and get them fitted. Bit of hassle but could save you £800.

I refuse to pay BMW prices. I bought run flat winter rubber from Camskill and get my local tyre depot to swap them twice a year on existing rims.

Totally agree that buying elsewhere is cheaper but after transfer case problems in previous gen X3 I wanted to make sure my warranty wasn't affected. BMW confirmed you have to have OEM wheels and tyres. Also my tyre insurance had a similar constraint. If you can get genuine from an independant or genuine from eBay then it sounds good. I was keen to get mine soon and wanted to have the dealer store my summer wheels. BMW do not charge the storage fee on the first rotation as apparently this cost is related more to the retrieval on subsequent rotations. My dealer does however charge a small service charge for the rotation in addition to the BMW storage charge but I didn't manage to get them to reduce this by 50%

I probably worry too much but to me saving a few hundred didn't seem worth the risk. That said some of the third party wheels are actually nicer looking and also paying a lot for winter alloys to be trashed is also not really sensible.

Using same rims is a good money saving option but I liked the idea of having something I could sell separately once I changed the car, although I may have another X3 in a few years if a new model is out then. Also I'm a bit OCD and the thought of the wheel balance weights being changed very 6 months would annoy me as the tyre guys always make a mess of the rim in my experience

If I had thought about it then the eBay route does seem the best choice but again I'd worry about the condition of the alloys, unnecessarily.

Got a good deal from my local dealer last year - it was around £1600 I think.

Well pleased - did a road trip to Austria.

Just ordered a full set of Nokian WR Suv 3 from Openeo at £420, looking for a set of alloys on eBay however if all else fail I will swap wheels and find some alloys in spring when demand should be lower.

What rim size are you looking for?

How many of you are using E83 wheels on an F25 for your winters?

These look like a bargain to me- as new tyres, as new alloys.

Thanks for that philtrick123, I saw these last night and I am keeping an eye on them, I have also seen the same on Gumtree but they are in the top end of Scotland.

Just keep your eye out. I saw a similar set go for £500 a few weeks ago. Bide your time and get a bargain.

Like skibuddy I've managed to get my new set of 18's for £1700 inc 2 changeovers.

I agree compared to some of the suggestions it seems expensive however taking everything into account I'm happy .... Personally I would never buy used/part worn tyres from ebay, having been cut out of a turned over car a few years ago which crashed due to a faulty tyre ... Nothing to do with ebay but I never take risks with tyres they are my only lifeline keeping me on the road. I also want to stick with 18's so by the time I spend 800-900 on good tyres plus 500-600+ on used rims plus the cost of change/balance etc there is not a huge difference between doing that and buying the brand new set @1700 with peace of mind that the tyres are safe and the alloys are sound.

I bought a set of E83 alloys last year and used them for the winter. Cost me 200 from ebay but I sold the tyres for 100 so I got a mint set of alloys for 100

Used them with 235/55/17 dunlop M3 and they worked well in the snow.

A word of warning about winter tyres from ebay, the minimum recommended tread depth for winter tyres is 4mm, many on ebay are around 4mm because they have been brought in from Europe. Choose carefully!

Why are people buying rims as well as tyres? I just got my local tyre dealer to swap them onto existing rims and store the summer ones till next year.

Have any of you guys bought new TPMS sensors to go with your winter wheels? If so, what are dealers charging for a set?

Just about to stick in an order for some 225/60 R16 Dunlop Winter Sport 3Ds and not sure I can live with a warning light on the dash all winter!

I phoned local BMW dealer North Tyneside last year and asked if they could do the 17" alloys with the pirelli sotozeros for £1,500. They agreed and fitted them for me. All done in an hour and they delivered my current 19" alloys to my home.

Swapped to Continental Winters today, no issues with existing sensors. My Bridgstone summers are now wrapped up awaiting a bit of sunshine next year!
