I cannot figure something out.
For Rodion, the max values are 50'000km.
For mibmwx3, it is 56'000miles or more for new, which is more than 90'000km for new.
Seems like new distance values are diferent for miles and kilometers cars.
I am surely missing a point, but where?

My guess is that in the beginning, there is default value. And after a while, value is approximation based on how much braking has been done so far and how long pads should last with similar wear. Sort of similar as calculation of fuel range.

I bought my 28i X3 in January 2011. It is now a couple months over a year of ownership and I have 21,800 miles on the vehicle. It has performed incredibly and I continue to be very happy with it.

At about 18,000 I did get the warning to bring it in for replacement of the rear brake pads and I did so. It was covered under warranty so it was not a major issue. I did talk with the service manager about it and he stated it is customary to replace the rear brakes around 18,000 in mileage. He did not elaborate as to why.

As a side note, I have not been following the oil change recommendations on iDrive. I have been having the oil replaced at every 8,000 or 9,000 miles instead of the 15,000 to 18,000 shown on my X3.

So 15K does seems a bit quick.
How do you check this on your idrive?

I collected my M Sport 30d on 18th July 2012. Brake pad change estimation at that time was 50k km for both front and rear.
I have now traveled a conservative 2k km. the brake pad estimation now reads 50k km. front and 46k km. for the rear. (8% wear after 2000km. is what I call excessive)
I have driven the first 2k km. very conservative, at this rate I will be lucky to get 10K km. out of a rear set of pads.

OK.....A bit worried!

My service indicator has just changed from due in 6000 miles to due in 700 miles, looking at the Vehicle status I have a yellow triangle in rear brake pads.

My car has done only 10700 Miles!!!!

I too got a call from the dealership who said my rear pads also needed replacing according to their computer info at less than 15,000 miles. I took it in and it turned out to be an error and mine was the 4th one they had with this.

I have driven 6000 KM with mine since new in June. Default value when new was 50 000 KM front and rear, now it says 50 K front and 60 K rear.

It's electronic brake force distribution. Light braking that does not cause much forward or lateral acceleration constitutes a more balanced distribution over the four wheels to prevent nose dive. Hard braking maintains the typical 70/30 setting on most cars.

We also have to think about the brake energy regeneration which drags the brakes when coasting.

Mine just hit 20000KMs and service required in ~10000KMs which would translate to roughly 18k miles.

Anyone else think the Auto Hold might seriously reduce brake pad life? Mine is always on, I've gotten so used to it now and love it. But in heavy traffic or at lights when people tend to be slow at starting, the Auto H seems to want to grab the brakes often and makes the car jerk ever so slightly, so I'm guessing that all this light braking/grabbing when your intention is not to actually stop but to coast at extremely low speeds might not help. Maybe the Auto H needs to wait a bit more before grabbing or I need to stop using it.

Auto hold does not cause any brake wear. It simply locks the rear pads in place. Think about it this way. If you put your parking brake on and come back 3 years later would there be any brake pad wear? Auto H is a great system and we also use it frequently, but I can tell you it's not causing any premature brake pad wear.

And concerning Brake energy regen, this also has no bearing on brake pad wear what so ever. Brakes ARE NOT engaged when coasting. The drag you feel when coasting is attributed to the regen system which couples the alternator to the motor. Brake Energy Regen is really a bad name as the system works when coasting and has absolutely no relationship with the brakes. It only engages when you are off the gas and coasting, but again, the brakes aren't 'dragging'.

My 2011 28i has the front brakes changed around 10,000km under warranty because of the braking noise. My rear brakes were changed when it has the 24,000km service.

In March, my expected replacement values were 56,000 front and 31,000 rear. Today they are 51,000 front and 29,000 rear.

My 2013 28i has only 290 miles on it. iDrive shows 31,000 left for front and 30,000 for rear. As someone said, I'm sure this is some sort of default value the vehicle starts with.
