2.0d Engine noise vs 1st generation.

Whilst driving I find that the engine noise inside the car seems much louder than in the previous generation which I drove for 2 years, does anyone fid this as well?

Only if the window's open! Never sat in a 1st gen X3 but the engine noise is quiet inside my 2nd gen IMO. There seem to be a lot of people reporting wind noise - and based on their descriptions, they must have a fault as I never notice it - so you may have a bad seal somewhere

Never heard the 1st gen but think my cabin is pretty quiet except some wind noise.

the new 520d is quieter than E60 520d and guess the reduction of the aggricultral d tones is part of the brief

The 2.0 diesel is much noisier to inside cabin compared to equals from Audi or Volvo. This was a let down for me, but I can live with excessive diesel noise, no problem.

One factor is that tyre and outside noises are well reduced and that is why engine feels to ear so noisy. I also noticed low frequency vibration when cruising 125km/h on freeway. Either from engine or auto transmission.

These are from test drive cars with some mileage already in and model year 2010 or 2011.

Never been in previous gen diesel X3 before, but in my opinion the engine sounds like 4cyl gasoline to me.

Its is noisy IMO, some said the latest one is quieter. I think BMW need to fix that problem for existing cleint who found their car noisy as a fix should be available. Please write to BMW UK to report this as thsi will give them some pressure to fix the problem!

I thought the 2.0D was noisy so changed my order to a 3.0D. It may also be noisy but it'll be a nicer noise!

Test drove a 2.0d

I agree the 2.0d I tested in the summer was a bit taxi-ish!

I have ordered the 3.0d. I had the 6cyl in a 3 series touring in 2002 and it was very smooth and with great power. It has been through several revisions but I am hoping for quiet times ahead.

The fact the 3.0 also has another 70hp helped sway the deal too. Just thinking about changing to the 35D now
