Anyone got Heads Up Display?
Hi all, I just placed an order for a 2011 X3 35i for early September production. I have been debating about getting the heads up display. Did you any of you get it? What do you think about it?
My car is ordered with the M, dynamic handling and technology package. Thanks!! |

Mine is currently in production but the model I test drove had the HUD installed. That feature was deciding factor in making me choose the X3 (I had originally wanted a sedan and was only looking at the SAV to appease my wife). We took the car out for an extended test drive and the navigation display is really, really, really convenient.

I personally skipped the option because people mentioned that if you wear polarized lenses, you won't be able to see the HUD. Secondly, the directions are displayed on the screen just below your speed gauges and for me, that is good enough.

Got it and love it, rarely look at the map for guidance. I also love the traffic warnings that pop up. No problem with my sunglasses I bought them with non polarized lenses. Polarized lenses are an issue with most computer screens.

I have and love HUD. Its super convenient and its something that most cars do not have. I have not had any problems with sunglasses and visibility, but most of mine are non-polarized.
It was just one of those must have items for us. The only issue is the cost to replace a windshield. 675+300 in labor if it needs to be replaced. Just ordered one Tuesday. |

Read a lot of computer screens with your sunglasses on?

I didn't. Seems pretty useless. How often do you need to know where to turn or how fast you are going? Is it that hard to glance at your speedometer or large Nav screen? I don't want something in my field of vision anyways. $1300 isn't chump change for the low amount of money I make.

My opinion is that you don't need it but it is cool and I would quite like it. The nav directions appearing on the dash are good enough (and also cool) for me really but I like the idea of having my speed up there.
I read somewhere that someone found it distracting when driving at night. Would be much better if you customise it more: add and remove information etc. Don't think cost of replacement is an issue in the UK as most insurance companies cover any windscreen with the same level of excess.

I also like the fact that we can adjust its height and brightness..
so, for people who find it disturbing during night driving, they could probably reduce the brightness! just my 2c |

The only options I didn't get are the auto high beams and the HUD. The only package I didn't get is the M "sport" package. You can't get the staggered performance tires with the M "sport" package! WTF!
When I am driving on the highway and passing everybody I am going too fast, when they are passing me I am going too slow. There is an alarm you can set when you exceed a particular speed and the NAV has voice commands if needed. I have another after market alarm that tells me when to slow down and it's made by Valentine. HUD is a neat option but probably a pain if you need a new windshield. I was debating whether or not to add it after I ordered the X3 but it went into production so fast I didn't have time to change my mind. I'm not complaining though.

Like all the options HUD is an option for a reason - you're not forced to have it. So some people can't see the point of HUD and others can't see the point of the M Sport package, yet others don't want to live without them. Thankfully BMW lets us make choices.

I ordered it and now wouldnt be without it.
I like seeing the current road speed limit up there. I think its a great safety feature. Just need to get some non polarised sunglasses for those sunny days! |

I didn't get the HUD because I heard that the windshield was specific for the HUD option. Replacing the specialized windshield is expensive. This is not based on facts, but on hearsay from a dealer. I was on the fence about the option and this tipped it over for me.
