BMW Turbo vs naturally aspirated
Hi, never owned a turbo Bimmer before only Subarus and making the big leap to BMW Turbo power. Any experienced views on advantages for each in the Bimmer world?

Smooth. I don't note lag (previous experience with a late 90s Saab that had deadly lag; night and day). The torque is a blast. Jumping up through a gap going 30 to something more than 55 is slap my ass and giggle fun. Had a 330i last and it was a blast. Love the addition of the turbo in th X3. Wish I could justify having a 335i, too!!

The turbo is the future, like it or not. I have a non-turbo 328i with a manual transmission, and it's a good combination. But the new 8-speed AT makes the turbo a very nice car to drive, with a good combination of power and fuel efficiency. Because of the AT, the turbo lag is inconsequential. It doesn't make as nice a sound as the non-turbo six, but the sound it makes is pretty nice all the same.

Turbo's
My 335ix is by far the smoothest turbo I have owned. My previous Turbo's (911,and Starion) came on like a light switch and were quite non linear and could be scary. A friends 911 Turbo blasted on when he downshifted on a interstate exit ramp, spun into the curb - 18K in damage to the mechanicals - the half shaft pushed into the trans. I have a X3 3.5 in production this week, and although I suspect it will not be as quick as the 335, it should be quite linear in power above 1500 rpm as the torque is constant.

Using the Sport setting on a X3 35i, the turbo enters so smoothly that one does not realize it is there... except for the prodigious increase of the acceleration !
