New X3 out runs E39 M5.......

I run across prototype X series vehicles being tested in the mountains all the time and came across this X3 a few week ago. I outpaced my M5 through 3rd gear numerous times and it was hell to keep up with in the twisties that I know fairly well. I'm no slouch with much track time and the M5 has H&R/Koni SA's. I don't know what engine they had in it but it was a bullet.

The larger diameter exhaust pipes may be an indication of the N55 turbo on board. Which would explain the acceleration in the twisters.

Good for the X3, but I would still favor your E39 M5 if I had a choice.

It was likely the N55 motor with the 8 speed automatic, which would probably be good for 0-60 in the mid 5 second range. Since you were in the mountains the turbo would have had and advantage over the M5 NA motor.

From those angles the X3 looks pretty good. I'm hoping that the spy photos and renders are wrong, and that they don't go the ML GLK route and ruin the front end. It seems the Germans are trying to keep the the small SUV/SAVs being considered too "feminine" by making them chunky and blocky.

The N55 would have had the exhaust tips on the separate sides of the car. BMW has reiterated time and time again (in interviews as well as in practice) that they are doing turbo cars with exhaust tips on both sides - 135i being the exception. (Haven't we seen spyshots of the X3 with the exhaust on both sides as well?) If it was a diesel, it was the 30d engine, and not the 35d.

True I guess that's possible. But this late into the testing stage? This car is basically production-ready at this point.

Insane.. Hell, the current X3 handles better than many cars. This turbo charged beauty will take it up a notch for sure..

+1......wish they offered that 3.0 TT diesel on the 5, 5GT and 7.....I love higher revving engines for the ///M division and sportier offerings like the iS line but the torquey and fuel efficient and low emmissions diesel is PERFECT DD.

Cheers,

It could be both diesel or gasoline engine. I have a diesel (325d) and my exhaust pipes do not differ one bit from 325i.

Yep, in the 80's they did. Now with DPF (diesel partikel filters) they dont. It could be also the new 306hp 3litre diesel. labeld as 4.0d.

Not seen any mules/test X3's with the twin pipes....one left/one right setup.Only the "European" style twin pipes on the left side of the car as you face it from the rear. The one oval pipe on the left side of the car is a diesel. My guess is that the twin pipes on the left side will continue into the production model and continue the same setup as the current X3.Thanks. Actually both 4cyl. engines gas and diesel have that oval outlet and twin pipes on left on both gas and diesel with 6cyl engines.
