BMW X3 or 328i xDrive
I am new to this thread. And I am planning to buy a new car and thought to go with BMW as I love those cars, even though I didn't own the car or never drove the car/SUV.
So I thought to to buy 328i xDrive as 328i sedan is not so good in snow. I live in Troy, NY. So for just comfort, do I need to buy x3 and spend more and sucks in the gas mileage than car or Do I need to buy 328i xDrive, which is a all-wheel drive? Again not sure if it is good in snow? So I need to know the difference of these two who owns the cars with the experience in snow and considering mileage? Please help me for my decision making. Thank you |

I have a 328xi (2008) and my wife has a 2009 X3....
Do you want a truck, or a car? The 328xi works well with winter tires in the winter ... I never got stuck or had a problem. The X3, well, it is an SUV so of course it works well in winter also ... with winter tires, even better. I dont pay a lot of attention to gas mileage, but they are not very different. So, again, do you want a car, or a truck? Kosaic |

Thank you Mike and Kosaic.....for your replies.
Actually I though to go for the car(328xi), then realized 2011 x3 is priced less than car. Without any options it is coming around 37500 and 328xi sedan is 37900 with automatic transmission. So with the same price(or little lower), why can't I go for SUV right? But again, dilemma about the mileage. If there isn't much difference then I can go with SUV. However, I don't have 0.9% finance where I can get for the car. Any more inputs? |

Guys, if anyone has any info/suggestion on the reasonable pricing for the 2011 X3 that would be very helpful. I know it's a new design and room for negotiation may not be as good as for the sedan - but if anyone has any info please share!!!!
If anyone by any mysterious chance knows the real invoice price for the 2011 x3 that would be awesome!!!!

Go with the X3... I have one from '05 with Sport Package. It's a beast of a car. No blizzards or mountains in Hunter, NY could stop it, nor the snowed over roads of Vermont. The 3.0i with sport will perform very well regardless of what you want to do. I've raced in it, and I've traversed very difficult roads in it. Plus it sits up higher than the 328i so you can get over lumpy roads (snow lumps, ice lumps) and you don't have to fear of running it up against a steep driveway or road. Hope this helps!

Upstate NY. Go for the X3. I grew up outside of Utica NY and went to visit the first time in 35 years. Now granted this was in October, but we went to some back roads that turned out to be ankle deep in mud. My little girl laughed and giggled while I did power slides around turns in the mud up a mountain road. We had no problems. The 328 would never have made it.
Also, if you don't flog it I have achieved 27 mpg hwy and 22 city. The norm is about 24 hwy and 18 city. So pretty respectable for an SUV. Last edited by Evlengr; 03-06-2011 at 06:49 AM.. |

The real world fuel mileage is honestly pretty close between the two.

Another Plus For the X3
One of the things that I didn't like about my E90 328i was the low ground clearance. The thing scraped on every parking stop I came across. I tried to keep from putting the nose over them but inevitably would forget until I heard that awful grinding noise. I even ended up ripping the underside on one and got charged at lease turn-in for the damage. From what I can tell the 3 X series have same ride height.
The X3 doesn't even come close to them. |

I used to own a 2003 325xi sedan and now own a 2011 x3.
Got the x3 b/c we now have 2 kids. If I had my way, though, I would get another xi sedan. I loved that car. Excellent in the snow. Awesome acceleration. Tight turning radius. Could weasel that car into just about any parking space. If you don't have any considerations that would make you lean more toward a bigger vehicle, I would go with the car. You will absolutely LOVE driving it. With respect to price Beemer-lover, the 2011 x3 with the smaller 2.5 engine, fully loaded is about 50K. |
