so... apparently testing power in the fuse box on this car isn't as simple as I thought.
1) Used a test light to check for power on / off when the ignition was on or off. Confirmed the accessory circuit I used is off when ignition is off via test light. 2) Connected everything, but the detector turned on then. 3) Stayed on w/ ignition, stayed on w/ ignition off. 4) What the hell is going on.. I've wired my E90 the same way and had no problem. I used the homelink slot on that though. But it showed the same symptoms with the test light though. |

what color wire for 2013, how to clear malfunction code
Has anyone hardwire a 2013 X3 ? I tried the overhead console and was able to remove it, but could not locate the green/brown hot switched wire, wonder if bmw has changed to different color wire for 2013 model...
also, has anyone got the 'passenger restraint malfunction' message after disconnected and reconnectd the console..? can we clear the code ourselves or have to take it to dealer..? thanks.. |

success for my 2013 X3
nevermind, it's the same color wire...green/brown.
i tried the fuses #186 as recommended as well as i had tested every one of them in the trunk, all were always hot...so i cracked open the overhead console again and this time i didnt look into the place recommended by alanintx and instead found the wire within the bundle on top of the windshield going into the rearview mirror..it was so much easier to access that one than alanintx's location.... after tried both fuses and overhead console method, i think the console one is the best for it's loaction in front and it's stealth and professional installation. of course, the removal of the console was the most time consuming and would take a lot of courage to remove. but once it has been removed and the trick and step are revealed, no big deal, i can easily go back and re-open it with a heartbeat now. another thing alanintx forgot to mention is to attach an in-line fuse holder to the positive wire. remember the original cigarette lighter plug that your radar came with has a fuse inside? so, i took it out and placed it inside the fuse holder to protect the radar.. also, dunt have to unplug the console once it has been removed from the roof. i made a mistake to unplug it, thinking it would be easier to access to the wire bundle which alanintx suggested, but after i plugged back and re-installed the console, i've got the 'passsenger restraint malfunction' message on the dash and the nav screen, had to take to the dealer to clear the code..so dunt do as i did in that compartment.. ok, that's it folk, happy hardwiring the radar..... |

Did you manage to clear your code?

Not sure you can post them directly to the forum, you might want to upload them to google picassa or something, then post the link...

Actually, you can get an OBD2 connector and use Pins 1 & 4 for +12Vand chassis ground. Much easier to do than risk breaking you overhead console. But hey... whatever works and easier for you. I do appreciate the pictures and the guide. Thanks...

I need to hide my escort/STI here in Scandinavia. Some guys with sirens on their car, want to collect them ;-)
E60 had space on the roof front panel. Now, X3 does not have space, because of sunroof motor. I manage to find suitable location from the back. I stole the electricity from auxilirity/cigarette socket next to it. Wired also a power switch to front. Behind that plastic at least you can hear it decently, no muffling materials used by BMW. You need to cut small piece to get the detector high enough, prevent metal/seats blocking the signal. So, how sensitive it is from the back? I haven't done yet comparison. I can report later. Need to see some certain cars on the road :-) "KA-band" |

Looks really useful but sadly not available here in Europe! Quote:
My understanding is each X3 wiring loom is made to order (to save weight/cost) unlike in days gone by when all cars had all the wiring. The full drawing would indeed be interesting to see. (sorry for being slightly OT)

So, to the front, somewhere behind the fog lights. Have to build a box with fans, avoiding engine heat + not exposed to foggy water + wire amplified speaker near over the pedals. When ready, I can post some pictures. |

Now we are getting exceptional reception from front. Lunchbox with the fans, keep it cool (I melt one STI previously..). Even though theres gonna be sometimes bit moist on the front of the wheel base, engine heat will be a bigger issue. Took a while to figure out why the Escort output volume was so low. It requires mono audio plug....or like I did it, finger nail lack to middle connection ring. Normal stereo plug will short ciruit the gnd/audio and the output is "muted".
Amplified speaker is a cool cheap Angry birds speaker with usb-charger :-). +12v is stolen from cigarette plug. If I need to access lunchbox frequently, there needs to be more nicer solution for the casing/mount, so that lunchbox can be take out behind the lamp and put it back... without removing the wheel arch plastics, what requires a bit work and new plastic "bolts/pins". |
