F25 N20 2013 drivetrain malfunction

Every now and then on the highway I will get this message on my BMW X3 2013. No noticeable change in performance. The message goes away after shutoff. I checked the codes with inpa and the code that stays there is 0x3E10. I looked online but can’t figure out what that one means.

Welcome to the forum...
inpa is pretty antiquated, have you tried a current diag tool like ista+
Have you had the timing chain/tensioners checked and or replaced since they're known to cause catastrophic engine failures on the early N20 engines?

Thank you! I will check ista+ didnt know inpa was old

I didnt know about the issue with timing chain/tensioner on this engine. I will check ista+ and see if I get a code that makes more sense.

Reported cases of timing chain failure are almost all with 2013s. Numerous threads if you run a search or two. But that failure typically is accompanied by a whining noise.

I was able to install Ista+ 4.29.15 (great software thx) the code 133E10 valvetronic system: deactivated adjustment fault too frequent. I'm unable to clear this one. I saw on other threads that you can activate the valvetronics and relearn the vanos limits, but not sure how to do that.

Also, regarding timing chain and tensioner the engine is not currently making any strange noises so not sure if it's something I need to look at.

It’s to your advantage to see if you qualify for partially covered repairs.Your dealer will know based on your vin number and in service date.you might be surprised.good luck, especially if you plan on keeping the car
