Question Putting OEM tires on a wider rim ...worth it?

Hi guys,

Few days ago I purchased a 2011 X3 28i which came with 245/50/18 tires on 18x8 rims.

I really like the look of a wider tire on X3 and I was wondering if I could achieve that by putting the OEM tire (245/50/18) on a wider rim 18x9 or maybe 18x9.5.

Could someone confirm that 245s will fit on the 18x9 or 18x9.5 rim?

Also, do you think that the wider rim will change the look of the car, or I have to purchase wider tires too?

Thanks,
D.

245 on a 9.5 wheel will give the tire a "stretched" look. Meaning that the actual wheel will be sticking out past the tire. (more of the wheel will be prone to getting curb rash and other things). If you want that meaty tire/aggressive setup, I would
Go with a 255 or even 265 on a 9.5" wheel.

The 245 will fit on the 9.5 but I don't advise doing it.(I'll try to post pictures of what I mean)

Thanks. You are probably right.

I saw in the bmw online-catalog that you can order 19'' x 9.5 wheels which come with 245/45/19 tires. That's why I was thinking that 18''x9.5 would be ok also.

How about 9''? Would that be more acceptable?

I guess 8.5'' would fit without problems but not sure if it would look much better then the stock 8''?

Yes, pictures would definitely help.

Thanks,
D.

This is how I did it when I bought tires/wheels for my Z.

245 millimeters = 9.64566929 in <-- It will fit but the wheel will stick out a tad bit farther then the tire.
275 millimeters = 10.8267717 in <-- This is what I'm running on a 10.5" wheel and it looks perfect.

You can kind of see how it looks but its hard to tell. The actual wheel is a little bit further out then the tire. Its much easier to curb rash the wheel.

I would honestly go with a 255 on a 9.5"

Thanks man!

So, it seems that your tire is about .32'' wider then the rim and you are happy with the setup.

I guess I should be Ok with 9'' on the 245s then? Based on your measurements, the tire would be about .64'' wider than the rim.

I agree, the best solution would be to buy wider tires but my 245s are almost new and I am trying to avoid buying another set.

Btw, your wheels look sweet!

Im actually not happy with the 245 on the 9.5". As soon as the tires wear I plan on getting at least a 255 maybe 265. The 275 on the 10.5 I like but I could always go 285/295. If you want grip/traction always go wider
