BMW X3 2007 tyres advice

hi all, I have the 2007 X3 sport package Australian Model. I need to get 4 tyres soon and i have been looking at YOKOHAMA advan sport v103 tyres. My original tyres are:
Front: 235-50-18
Rear: 255-40-18

I found a deal on 4 set of tyres from interstate (from Syd, and i am from Melbourne), but they are 245-45-18. My mechanic said it should fit perfectly. But when i talk to Bobjane and my local tyres shop, they said dont change it. Must get the same as original incase of Insurance and they think i shouldn't buy that size at all. Coz the Rear rim might be too wide to fit that size.
YOKOHAMA Avan sport v103 245-45-18 I can get it for $220each (plus $10each delivery)

Original size: YOKOHAMA Avan sport v103 Front: 235-50-18 $340each
YOKOHAMA avan sport v103 Rear: 255-40-18 $380each

Please help
Thanks

The X3 is super sensitive when it comes to tyres. If it is not an approved BMW tyre my advice would be to leave well alone! I recently bought my X3 in the UK from a dealer with non standard tyres fitted. After 5 days i used the car in heavy traffic and found the car would judder terribly in the stop start traffic. It was so bad i thought that the diff or gearbox was on its way out so car returned to dealers where they found and took responsibility for the tyres and fitted me a new set of BMW approved tyres at their cost!

I'm going to get a set of Continental ExtremeContact DWS for my X3 in the fall. I've got them on my 325i and love them. No, they aren't OEM tires for the X3, but I don't really care.

I'm kind of a skeptic when people say that X3s are "super sensitive" to tires. It's true that you really need to be running a matched set of tires, and you probably want to stick to something in the same load range as the OEM tires (99).

There are lots of people with stories like those above - "I bought cheap tires and the X3 didn't like them, then I put new OEM tires on and everything was back to normal..." I don't think these people consider that maybe they just had a bad tire or 2. There's probably quite a few people who put a new OEM set of tires on, have a similar problem, and take it back to the dealer for a replacement. The difference is, they probably get the same brand of tires as a replacement and are told "yeah, you just got a bad tire from the factory, happens all the time".

I just can't deal with this idea that there's only 3 OEM tires I can buy for my X3 and anything else will cause my transmission to shudder. So I'm gonna be brave I guess....

I am also in the process of having some non oem tires put on my x3, I'm actually putting on non oem sized wheels and non oem sized tires. The issue to be concerned with is making sure that the overall diameter of the tires front to back are the same or within 1%. The 1% tolerance is the same tolerance that the 3 series xdrive guys use without issues.

What my new replacement tires/wheels are

Hi All,

FWIW, I just replaced my factory '05 wheels (style 114 18x8ET46 Front, 18x9ET51 Rear) with a staggered set of 19" Style 179 from a e90.

I put on 245/45ZR19 for the 19x8ET37 front and 275/40ZR19 for the 19x9ET39 rear (Falken Azenis 722 A/S).

Been using it for 4 days nows and it all feels fine.

Just make sure your as close to the 1% tolerance for F/B difference.

alex

I've got a colleague in Sydney with a Q5 who imported a complete set of genuine tyres from tirerack.com cheaper than he could get them from Bob Jane or others in Sydney. Website says they don't ship to Aust or NZ but if you email them they get back to you real quick with a quote including shipping. I got a quote from them for some conti's for my X3 & will be going with them.
