Oil level check
I tried to do a oil level check today and the check started and then defaulted to the car level, in park at idle message.
Car met all conditions but the engine idle speed increased from the normal 700 RPM to 1125 as the test was in progress and then defaulted. The oil status is green but I would like to see the actual level. The level function had worked previously. I did not note the RPM increase when the check actually worked. If the sensor is bad would it throw a code ? Any ideas ?? |

There should be an increase in revs as the system does its thing checking the level. If the system is faulty I would think it would throw a code. Good luck

My 2015 X3 N55 will increase engine RPM from around 800 at idle to about 1100-1200 during oil level measurement and then drop back to idle when the check is complete. Does this every time.

Oil lvel check
Thanks for the responses.
My biggest concern is that the "oil ok" indication (green engine shows) is correct. I have not owned this car for a long time and have no idea of possible oil consumption. (N20 2Lwith 109500mi.). Currently only 2000 miles since last oil change but I would really like to see if the oil level has dropped via the level indicator. I ran a code check and nothing related to mechanical or oil issues. |

Do you have a code reading app/device? With BimmerLink phone app you can access the oil level in mm. Along with a host of other parameters. You could spot check level periodically

Oil lvel check
My2013 acually has two seperate oil checks in the Idrive menu. The are not combined as shown on the screenshot.
The oil ok "green" engine is working it is the actual oil level check that starts the check and then defaults to the standard message of lecel, idle, warmed up,etc, It had functioned previouly about a month back. |

Can you post a pic? It's not clear as to what you're trying to describe.
When you write "The oil ok "green" engine is working"...it makes me think you're referring to the engine oil SERVICE screen...which is not your engine oil level but that your “service for oil change” is not due yet:

I take back what I said above. I checked my oil level in my garage yesterday and for the first time noticed that the rpms do indeed increase during the process.

I am not shocked that RPM's are slightly above idle required for oil level check; to ensure consistency, which you won't have at idle due to AC compressor.

Oil lvel check
UPDATE Problem solved !!
Thanks for the responses and I am summarizing the steps I took and what I learned On my vehicle the oil check and the oil level check are two different windows The RPM increase is normal and even noted in the owners manual. I was concerned that 2500 miles on a oil change and not knowing the actual oil level could lead to problems. This was reinforced by a U tube video of a engine that had to be replaced due to lack of oil. I wound up replacing the sensor in the oil pan for lack of better ideas and this solved the problem. No codes ever indicated a oil sensor issue. The "oil check" window always showed ok. (green) The part I replaced was dated 2015 so it had been a problem earlier. Both old and new were Hella. When doing a oil level check with the new part I noted that it was slower than I remember with the old. The old part would read to 20% quickly and then default to the level, park, idle etc message. Sensor was easy to replace. I spent more time on the lower sound/splash shield remove/replace than the sensor. |
