Maybe in your case, the inclination was not steep enough to trigger the hill-start assist sensor? You can tell if hillstart assist is activated if you lift off the brake pedal on an incline (with auto hold feature turned off) and press it again, the pedal will be stiff as if the auto hold is on.
That's weird cause the hillstart for my car must have not kicked in. Cause it was definitely rolling down like a manual car. I was actually quite surprised when that happen cause even my Toyota would not do that on D(gear).

According to the UK brochure I have from June - in addition to 20D spec - 30d adds DSC Extended contents - which includes Brake drying, Brake fade compensation, brake pre-tensioning and Hill Start Assistant

Agreed, Hill Start Assist should be standard, on all US models anyway. There is a stop light near our house with a very steep approach. I can sit at that light with Auto Hold OFF and not roll back at all. Nice little feature. Wish they had that many moons ago when I was learning to drive stick!

Actually got some seat time in a manual WRX recently and it will hold on a hill for like 3 seconds then release. Gives rookie manual drivers a chance to engage gear before rolling. Kinda cool feature too.
