Small Left-Hand Glove Box in 2015 Models?

I recently acquired a 2014 X3. Today, to my great delight, I discovered that there is a small glove box on the driver's side of the dash, between the steering wheel and the door - very convenient. Oddly, there is no mention of the 2nd glove box in my owner's manual.

A question for the 2015 X3 owners: Is the little left-hand glove box still present in the 2015 models? If so, is there any configuration of packages/features/options (for example, M Line, DAP, DAP+, etc.) which results in the loss of the glove box?

Any insight would be very much appreciated. Regards. -scr

That's encouraging. I was concerned that, perhaps, the dash space needed for the glove box might be usurped by switches, indicators or electronic modules for some of the high-end options. Thanks. -scr

@SoCalRob do you have the Extended Storage option? I believe that, in the UK at least, the additional fold-out storage between steering wheel and driver's door comes as part of this option

I'm not sure the 2014 US models offered the "Extended Storage option" you refer to, at least by that exact name.

According to the window sticker, my 2014 X3 has the Cold Weather Package, the Premium Package and the Technology Package. It also has a Storage Package, but that's listed as "Included" rather than as an option. My understanding is that the package consisted of the cargo net, black nylon folding storage box, compartment dividers, and possibly a few other items, but I'm not positive.

I've played extensively with the 2015 configurator and I don't recall being able to select an "Extended Storage option" there.

I guess that's why I'm posing my question to US 2015 owners in general - just trying to figure out if the left hand mini glove box is a standard feature, or if it's only available in particular configurations. Regards. -scr

From UK configurator

Extended storage. Additional luggage compartment functionality: storage net on left- hand side wall, lashing rails and four lashing eyes, oddments tray with dividers and folding box under luggage compartment floor. Inserts for cupholder (front) with Chrome rings and folding compartment under light switch, storage nets on rear of front seats and in front passenger footwell, rear centre armrest with cupholders. Additional power sockets: one in front centre armrest, one in the rear centre console and one in the luggage compartment.

A bit expensive at £330 though! Didn't seem to get the cupholder chrome inserts with mine either.

the extra storage box left of the steering wheel is standard on my 2015 x35i, but then again all that ^^^ "extended storage" stuff for the UK configuration appears to be standard on my US model..

Does anyone have pics? I order my car very early and the options list was not very clear.

If you look on this thread, you'll see a retrofit on a UK car

Thanks for elaborating. With the exception of the cup holder inserts, I believe that all of these items came standard on the US version of the 2014 X3.

From what a couple of other members are saying, it appears that the mini glove box (aka the folding compartment under light switch) continues to be a standard feature on 2015 US X3 models. I sure hope so because that glove box is immensely useful to me. -scr

There was a thread here a year or two ago which provided a DYI including parts to retrofit the storage bin referred to...

I'll see if I can find it.

EDIT: here it is: http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=610657

Thanks for the link, PerryGunn and lbjgh. That is clearly not a retrofit for the timid! I just finished the retrofit to remove the phone cradle from my center console, but I'd be terrified to undertake anything that involved hacking into the front of the dash!

Unfortunately, one of the responses in the linked thread does concern me:

This is the kind of thing that has me worried - that perhaps the space for the mini glove box is used up by one of the higher end options.

I'm hoping a 2015 X3 owner (ideally one who has the HUD option) can shed some light here. Regards. -scr

I've got the HUD in my new 2015 X3, and the small storage compartment. I can't think of an option that would preclude that space being available...

Did you by chance also get the Lane Departure Warning feature? I found a diagram in my 2014 owner's manual which appears to show the switch and/or indicator for that feature in the same area where the small storage compartment door should be. Regards. -scr

Our (fully loaded) 2011 came with a small storage space on the left side... no lock but a small door which opens downward. I thought it was standard on all models.

My 2013 has it, and it came as part of an optional storage package S493A. Little features like this that are so common on Hondas and Kias shouldn't be extra cost options on $50,000 BMWs.

There was a thread on this blog about people retrofitting these little bins, but of course it involves cutting a hole in the dash.

I speced the extended storage on my 2012 X3, but I have never used the small bin on the dash. Also never used the large luggage net or removable lashing hooks in the boot (trunk)- covered by a large boot mat. I have used the attached elastic nets, but for car of this price all this should be standard fit.
