Vanos Broken Bolt upon Recall service

I took my 2011 35 M sport in for the Vanos Bolt Recall today and just got a call that mine has a broken bolt. Dealer needs it a few days and parts are on order.

Steve Thomas BMW (Camarillo,Ca) has been the best service department so far in my experience and they gave me an i3 loaner for the time being.

Anyone else have actual broken bolt(s) when they brought it in? When i dropped it off my awesome SA told me its a 1 in 10. Looks like I should go buy a lottery ticket.

I love my F25, and have been happy with the service at my dealership. just wondering if this is an isolated incident. I would have been more expeditious if I knew the bolt issue was a pending concern.

Cheers

Chris

I received my recall letter about 6 months ago. The dealer just called today to say they are ready to have me bring it in. Up until now, the dealers in my area didn't have the parts. They started rolling things out in Canada first and are now only getting to NA.

Did you hear noise like a tumbling of coins ? Was there a loss in performance? Just wondering.

Did not notice anything. Engine has been relatively smooth since we took ownership last year (25k/2011).

SA said its like 1 in 10. Taking my sisters F25 35 in soon. Hope hers doesn't have any damaged bolts.

Had mine replaced in August, wasn't told if any were broken or not but did take them the better part of a day to complete it. Didn't notice any difference in performance after either.

I took my sisters F25 in today and noticed it is significantly quicker and throttle response was amazing. It was "VTEC like from about 4k to redline." I've always considered my F25 to be quick, but wondering if the damaged bolt made the vanos less responsive.

I'll see when I get mine back, but I would say that if the car isn't hauling ass off the line and hitting redline and firing off silky smooth shifts, you may have a problem.

Was this Vanos bolt issue an official recall that would show up in a VIN search for recalls? What years/models were affected?

Just got mine back. Seems a bit peppier. My SA says that the techs/foreman at the shop say its a toss up if it really caused an issue or if its just my mind being paranoid.

One tech says its possible that hydraulic pressure would be lower at high RPM, the other says it would throw a code.

Regardless, the problem is Fixed for now. My sisters F25 35 did not have any damaged bolts in her vehicle, it was an in-n-out repair. Takes about a day to pull the valve cover and replace the bolts.
