As someone waiting for their X3 I find it quite interesting to read the different reports on this subject. Some people don't have any issues and others do.

Can it really only affect certain cars?

I note the following from the Telegraph's review of the X3:

Quote:
This is also a quiet and stable motorway cruiser, a point demonstrated by the fact that all you really hear at a 70mph cruise is wind noise around the wing mirrors - any engine and road noise are conspicuous only by their absence.

I was wondering if it was build day related ... :-)

Regarding the Telegraph's review, at some point it is true. I personally don't hear any engine noise and maybe a little road noise on the highway at speeds 70 mph and above not because they do not exist, but mainly due to the relatively high level of wind noise present in my car's cabin. When on the other hand I drive on a worse quality country road, I feel my wind noise is lessened, not because it really did lessen , but just because road noise increased this time.

I am always based on the feel of the interior noises when driving on the highway- good road quality- when making statements like I have a wind noise and a traffic noise issue.

1) Wind noise from about 60 mph, it sounds like the car is being driven on a blustery day even in still conditions. This noise almost certainly emanates from the large mirrors but it should not enter the cabin.

2) Traffic noise - other vehicles, particularly on the motorway, can be heard loudly. The level of traffic noise is commensurate with wet weather even though the road is dry.

3) External noises such as people talking, passing trucks and car stereos are at a level I would expect from a convertible with soft top (ie not a metal roof).

4) When driving on local roads at say 30 mph in the wet I can hear the water sloshing from the tyres. I'm well aware the RFTs tend to be more noisy than normal tyres but this is not tyre noise per se. Our Mini One is far quieter on wet roads that the X3.

I have now heard back from Customer Services following my writing to the BMW UK MD.

I am told that the noise level in the cabin is determined to be a characteristic of the vehicle and that BMW Germany have advised that no modifications will be released for my vehicle, as they believe that no fault is present on my vehicle.

My expectations are clearly in advance of what BMW believe they should be. BMW seem happy with the the X3 being noisier than other similar vehicles. [/QUOTE]

Clive, it is sad to read BMW's official response to you. I thought being a premium brand they should have approached their loyal customers more wisely.

Maybe we should ask them this: If they were so happy with the car in terms of noises, then why did they release the wing mirror TSB in their first model year? Apparently there are complaints worldwide re wind noise, and that TSB clearly wasn't a total solution ( I know because I had it done), but they are not ready to officially accept that there is a fault.

I agree Ural.

I find that on motorway/highway surfaces which are course thereby inducing tyre noise, this is when hear significant tyre noise from other vehicles. This noise from other vehicles actually seems worse than from my X3.

The tone is that they are sorry for my disappointment and frustration but that's how the car is.

What I still don't know is whether I'm more analytical and picky than those who say their cars are quiet or is my car more noisey than theirs? I know the demo 35D locally is worse than mine.

The latest is that BMW (not the dealer) confirm my car is performing as it should. If I were still driving 35,000 / year I'd be screaming for them to take the car back. My driving patterns have changed and I can live with the noise (just), fortunately performance, economy and space are as expected so all is not lost. It is a very shoddy design if it's really meant to be this noisy.

Today I picked up a 320d as my X3 is in for yet another warranty issue. The wind and traffic noise in the 320d is identical to my X3. It seems this is the new standard spec for BMW....

I'm getting headlight vertical aim errors. It could be software, they may simply re-program the car.

Before that I had a transfer case oil leak.

Before that it was some saggy leather.

Oh yes, wind noise too but that seems to be standard!

That sucks Mine goes in tomorrow for a replacement of a worn flocking that is causing the drivers side window to screech when it goes up and down and also for the recall on the passenger window regulator.

my passenger side window did that yesterday as well... was wondering whether it was the hot weather but the rest seemed to be fine... may try and see it will be repeated later...

how saggy does the leather need to get before they will replace it?

I had a big differential between the drivers seat and the much less used passenger seat - which was the saggy one. The replacement is quite saggy too but there are at least no creases now.

I've never had any previous model X3, but my 2013 is very quiet. No complaints at all.

I have reached now 40,000 kms in 10 months, but still cannot get used to the idea that a BMW produces that wind noise starting from 80 km/h . I am now positive that the noise comes in through the window at the upper corner where the door meets the B pillar. Couple of weeks ago while on the highway I shoved some napkins to that area from inside between the door frame and the window , and the irritating noise was gone almost 80%. I took photos to show the service rep, however I was extremely busy since to bring it in. Sometimes I think of putting some insulation myself, but have not figured out yet how to do it.

With 8,500 miles no excessive wind or road noise. It's not a 5 series, but leaps and bounds quieter than most cars on the road.

I just pick up mine from dealer. I'd like to say there is no excessive wind noise now. My dealer installed the revised parts for both mirrors based on the TSB but no improvement and they did research and experiments then found one more part need to tighten the revised mirror base to housing. I had to wait for a month until that little part coming from Germany because it was not available in bmwna. I believe those little clips came from the upper 5, 6 or 7 models made in germany. Dealer didn't give me part numer. My loaner was a brand new 2013 X5 50i, which had a same wind noise. Strange...

Give us the close up pictures of the mirror assembly showing what new has been added or replaced the old parts. Thanks.

Ural, I think you're onto something here. Looking at the seal at the top of the window it seems as if there could easily be a fraction too much gap which would not apply enough pressure on the rubber seal....allowing noise in. The sealing frankly look cheap.

Exactly, Clive. Do you think that area can be insulated without replacing the sealing?
