Price for new rear Wheel arch, M Sport?

well Garage 1 - X3 0

Wife ran the rear wheel arch into the side of the garage and took a nail in the process, causing this deep gauge, obviously paint will not work here (or it would look really bad). It looks like this piece can be replaced on its own as nothing else was damaged. Even though its a small plastic piece I imagine it will not be cheap, anyone have any ideas of how much this is going to cost us? I figure the part will probably be $125 alone, plus paint and labor, maybe $300? or am I too low on that guess?

I know the part should be under $200 it's the paint I worry about because as you said they can't be ordered painted.

My wife doesn't want to fix it, I told her you don't buy a $55k car and not fix something like that. I just told her she doesn't get a birthday gift this year, haha

You're right-on for the price. See #15 on this link from Realoem.com for the part number:
http://realoem.com/bmw/showparts.do?...79&hg=51&fg=95

And see this parts price from a BMW dealer near me:
http://nhbmwparts.reachlocal.net/par...&siteid=215800

Wish I could help on the paint/labor cost, but that's not something that is easily looked up online. I agree with you though, it has to be fixed.

You're on your own re: the wife's birthday present. Me, I remember the friend (true story) who had to bring in a concrete cutter to enlarge the door opening for his wife's Escalade, as well as replacing the garage door with a special low profile model for overhead clearance. I would be happy with the repair cost, and pray that it doesn't come to the concrete cutter, LOL!

I reckon the damage can be easily filled, by a paint specialist.

I'd recommend getting the replacement part and having it painted if there's much chance of you selling the vehicle. Inspectors may detect the repair if you fill and paint and wrongly conclude that the vehicle was in an accident. If you replace the part, it'll be like new. Cost shouldn't be much different. New part adds price but labor is the most. Less labor for paint and swap than for fill, prep, and paint. Probably not a big difference either way, though.

yeah I was thinking they could sand it down, fill it and paint it, but I am not sure that would be much cheaper than getting a new part and painting it.

Nothing I hate more than "accidents" like this though, My father did something similar to his 2009 M3 last year, was turning into the garage (side garage) and thought he had clearance, well he will never take that chance again, scratched up his entire front bumper and lower part of the headlight. If you hit some ice and run into something thats acceptable, not much you could have done to avoid it, scratching your car on the side of your garage, that is just silly

If there is any consolation the part damaged is only plastic. Whats a few hundred bucks to fix a $60k car?

A local body shop quoted me $197 over email. I sent a picture paint code and part number.

I don't think that is bad at all is the parts msrp is $120. Will see what BMW quotes me.

I don't mean to disrespect your wife or anything--and I remember your long posts about how she ruined your LR2 with bumper ding after fender scrape--but c'mon. She needs to learn how to park. Especially with the Top View camera, there is no excuse for that. Forgive me if I'm overstepping my boundaries here, but it couldn't hurt to take her to a parking lot with some big plastic garbage bins and teach her how to park. You learn it once and you never forget.

Maybe his wife doesn't care about damaging the car.

There are plenty of people who look at a car as an "appliance" and just don't give a $hit... explains why I have to practice defensive parking. ya never know who is going to park beside you.

Hmmm. This hits home all so easily.

My wife, in her infinite wisdom, decided to swerve to avoid a cane toad on our driveway and clipped the gate, leaving a scuff on the front door handle, the rear door and the rear wheel arch (M Sport - all painted carbon black).

For those who dont know, the Cane Toad is the most despised creature ever imported into Australia. An ugly poisonous creature that is rapidly spreading to all parts of Australia and wiping out thousands of native species from it poison or from eating them. (It ignores the cane beetle it was imported to eat - they were really clever in the 50's about this sort of thing).

So, to avoid hitting a vile and poisonous pest, she drove into a gate.
Hopefully it will all buff out.

All this happned at less than 5 kph. Arghhh.
