2011 X3 RPMs too high?
Newbie to XBimmers. Would greatly appreciate some input on this issue. I have a 2011 X3 28i with the standard 8 speed. After a recent hard shift the shifting returned to normal. However, I think I'm running at higher rpms than prior to the recent hard shift. My memory might be playing tricks on me but I thought at 70 mph that I WAS running just below 2000 rpms just like my other cars. However, now I'm running at 2200 rpms steady at 70 mph. Does anyone have a similar 6 cyl, 8 speed and have an idea how many rpms you run at 70 mph?
BTW the geniuses at my dealer and at the national BMW site have no idea what it should be and have not been any help in solving my issue. Thanks!! |

during my recent road trip from Toronto to New York. I have notice that when crusing 110-120km/h, it's been a littlke over 2000 rpm consistantly. i wonder what factors plays into that. like you, i swear i was able to keep it 2000rpm when driving at 110km/hr(just under 70mph). road condition ie rougher road?, different tires? i also have racechip installed, that might play a factor? i feel with 2000rpm, it gets best mileage.
there are my thoughts, hopefully we get some response from fellow X3 owners |

I suggest you check by going to Manual - you should be cruising on 8 in Auto at 70 mph.
If you are on 7 at 70 mph, you have a bit of a problem. If you are on 8, and still too high revs, you can be in deep shit |

Welcome to the forum, X3Fan. Last year I studied RPM, MPG, HP, Torque, and % Engine Load vs Speed (mph) for our two X3 35i models in the 'Horsepower & Speed' thread ( http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1004702 ). As 02420X3 indicated, RPM at 70mph was around 1900 for us as well.
I was hoping others might contribute similar data for the 28i (and all engine types actually), but so far I haven't seen such. For what it is worth, I'm reattaching the 35i Summary chart here, but I am not sure how well it translates to the 28i variant. |

Thanks for your feedback 02420x3. I think my 28i ran around 1900 rpms also. One of my thoughts is why would any manufacturer have 8 speeds and run over 2000 rpms at cruising speeds? Doesn't make sense. I'm getting some good suggestions from the forum. Thanks again.

A friend made the same suggestion as you-try shifting manually. I think I'm going to try that tomorrow. Good suggestion. Thanks again. |
