Dipstick?

We have a 2.0d on order.

Simple question, does it have a dipstick or a electronic oil level check?

I know some people prefer a dipstick my preference is electronic.

Not sure about the 2.0d the 3.5 has an electronic system, still getting used to if after all these years of manually checking the oil.

No dipstick

no dipstick. go to the display and after a few clicks through the menu, you will see the oil levels, and other things, tire pressure, etc.

Can I ask why no dipstick is your preference?

Lol....laziness I guess. Have dipstick on my mini and must admit to not checking that regularly. It's good to have the ease of checking easily at the push of a button, agreed?

Not to mention opening the bonnet finding a cloth to clean the dip stick and trying not to get dirty hands in the process.

This is my second vehicle with only an electronic dipstick, an after some initial impulsive frustration at not having any conventional dipstick at all, I must admit that the electronic dipstick has won me over. It is definitely a better way.

Think about it for a second. It would be like having had no gas gauge, and having to check the gas dipstick to see what you had in the tank. Then some smart engineer came along and put in a gas gauge and eliminated the fuel dipstick. Some people would inevitably complain. They were used to the gas dipstick. It was a ritual. They don't trust the gas gauge.

I happily accept the electronic oil gauge. Frankly, with the technological advancements in modern vehicles, if they hadn't come up with this, I'd probably have started to wonder why I had to open the hood and find a rag to check the oil. Shouldn't I be able to do that just by pressing a button?

Indeed I should.

The 20D has both electronic measurement and a dipstick (or at least it used to). http://x3.xbimmers.com/forums/showth...k#post11154616

Doe anyone know if the 35d has an electronic oil check as well as the dipstick? I'm still waiting for mine (July). I've always been more for the dipstick but somehow think it would be about time the diesels have the same system as the 35i, 335i etc.
Btw is there a known reason for the dipstick on the diesels - why the difference?

Just wait until cars get a few years older and DPF issues start and you get oil dilution and the system goes into confusion, with oil 'too high' warnings. It is a disaster waiting to happen, causing severe customer panic and accusations of customers overfilling the engine. (Oh sorry, it is already here in other models).

Nothing like a mechanical check.

Hmm, that's gonna be weird. No dipstick to check oil level. Old guys like me.......we'll miss that stuff. I hadn't bargained on that.
