Can't see a technical reason why the remote app won't work in the US. Perhaps it's a legal thing. The UK version has lots of privacy safeguards like the fact the locate car has a maximum range of 1500m and only works if the key isn't in the ignition. Ultimately though, the car has a SIM and all that the remote app does is "call" the car and ask it to do something

I'm thinking you may be right re it being a legal thing. Bummer. Likely not a privacy issue here, more likely liability.

It is now possible to retrofit 6NR on X5s and X6s

http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=508044

I have contacted the company re. whether this will be available for the new X3 and it should be but no date just yet. There will be a new thread on this forum if/when it does become available

BMW Connected

In the US, "My BMW Remote" is called "BMW Connected" and is available on iTunes.

BMW Connected and BMW Remote are completely different apps. The former is for use with 6NR. The latter is for remote unlocking/locking/finding your BMW/making it flash its headlights/beep its horn/sending locations to your BMW

So my CA in Melbourne has advised that 6NR is unavailable in Aus, however that 6NK is the same thing just with a different code for the region. Is he completely full of it?

Also - does anyone know if the iPhone 4 snap-in is available now? Does this require the dealership to fit it or can I do it myself?

Cheers,
Jordan

6NK is not the same as 6NR at all. As you suggested, he is full of it.

The basic iPhone 4 snap-in adaptor is now available and is easy to install yourself. The media snap-in adaptor is supposed to be available now but isn't as far as I know. You need the latter for 6NR

Thanks mate, as I thought. Apparently 6NR is not available in Aus regardless which is a shame...

Our X3 was made in the end of Feb so we got the 6NF, not the 6NR. We have all the other requirements for the 6NR but evidently you can't upgrade the 6NF to the 6NR (for some reason which has not been explained). Question then: what good is the 6NF? Did we pay $150 (list) for nothing? Why should we buy the iphone4 adapter since it evidently has no function other than charging the phone (music/phone functions come through bluetooth). I've asked my Dealer to query BMW on this situation.

When you specifically ordered or chose a car with 6NF, what were your intended uses? It has been pretty clear for a while that 6NR would be available only on cars produced after 4/2011 for the X series, so this should not be a shock. The lack of a retrofit from BMW is also standard fare, based on past mid season upgrades.

As far as your dealer querying BMW on this, best of luck. A search here and other sites will show a confusing and fact starved search for BMW's position on backward compatible 6NR possibilities.

6NF gives you the ability to listen to music on your iPhone when it's in its cradle if the cradle is a snap-in media adaptor. Without 6NF the cradle is only for charging and signal boost. It is absolutely not worth getting 6NF and a snap-in media adaptor solely for this feature IMO but if it's something you'll do a lot, then maybe it's worthwhile. Most people will get 6NF to support 6NR but that is not exclusively what it's for

Well, BMW was touting apps for car before the 6NR was "announced" and only the 6NF was listed for smartphone purposes, so naturally I ordered the 6NF, there being no 6NR. I suspect, as mentioned, that the cradle is only for charging and better antenna. If so, that is not smartphone anything and if I can't be upgraded, I should get my money back. Good luck, of course, but I don't mind bugging them to death. I'm also an EE/CS guy, so I can't imagine why they can't upgrade the 6NF if you have the other parts (Nav, Bluetooth, etc.). In fact, I would love to remove the cradle base since it's taking up half the storage area!

For the avoidance of doubt, 6NF is not the cradle, it's merely preparation for the cradle. It is more than just charging and antenna boost as I don't have 6NF and yet I do have both of these functions through my iPhone 4 snap-in adaptor. 6NR adds a USB interface to the phone through the cradle that you would otherwise be without. You can then play music on your iPhone whilst it's plugged into the cradle. You can't do this without 6NF. If you have 6NR too, the capability is increased still further. 6NF is only of any use in conjunction with a music or media snap-in adaptor.

Apologies in advance if any of this wrong. It's just my understanding of a difficult subject! I have 12 years commercial experience in IT, albeit software not systems, and find BMW's tech options bewildering so how anyone non-technical understands some of them is a mystery. The dealers seem to all be completely clueless. BMW UK don't know their arses from their elbows and regularly give out false information (refer to this thread)

Yes, very confusing, but I can play music from my iphone through the bluetooth connection with the iphone just sitting there. I don't need the cradle for that. The 6NF option is listed as "Smartphone Integration" on my invoice, there is no prep or cradle anything mentioned. So, I expected Smartphone integration, just like 481 say "Sport Seats" and I have Sport Seats. Again, there was absolutely positively no mention of 6NR when I ordered my car in February (otherwise I would have bought it!) Actually, towards the end of February I heard about the 6NR (only through the forum here) starting in March and since I had an end of March build date I thought I was OK. But, then they decided to build the car a month early where it sat for a month until my Perf Center Appointment. I'm thinking that there may not be the backlog of orders that they say. Anyway, not a super big deal, I just want to get of the useless cradle.

Saw this post on e90post.com. Not sure if it can be verified.

Retrofit 6NR

According to email info from BMW plant Dingolfing the retrofit is scheduled to be available 06/11, which sounds good to me. No info regarding costs, but I guess it will be ~ 200€. In addition you will need to have the cradle. I have the first release of the media snap in, which heats up pretty fast. I will ask BMW for a change once the new model will be available.
Greetings from Munich
