I would suggest it looks like a calendar symbol - which might just be to tell you that the numbers and slashes to the right of the symbol represent a calendar date.
(One date per page, spiral binding on the top)

I dont have mine yet - is there a toggle to change from the date display? Does this symbol only appear next to the date?
Is there another symbol there when that line of the display shows something different?

Agree with Stig, it is just indicating that the numbers represent the date. That symbols only appears next to the date and will disappear if you choose not to display the date. Try playing around with the BC button on the turn signal stalk

Seems odd they'd put a calendar next to the date and not a clock next to the time. Not the strangest UI element BMW has ever come up with, though.

Probably so people won't be confused that the date displayed is for calendar entry, not the next service due date

Yes I agree. I guess I have to get use to BMW display esthetics.
What is a UI element?

Thank you. Yes it does look like a calendar. The date can be taken off completely in the computer display area. The icon or symbol does not appear anywhere when changing settings. It appeared after 5 months of driving.
Awesome Z4 you are getting.

Your closest to the fatherland. In the german driving experience do they what you to know that you are looking at a date calendar in your dash display?

I'm begining to lean towards this assumption...since it is outside the warning indicator area and in the computer display area it must have a very mundane meaning.

User Interface element. Just means a part of the way the system (in this case a car) or device communicates with humans.

It's just an icon and it's always there next to the date if you have the date switched on (it is for me anyway)

A picture of a calendar => date
A picture of a fuel tank => estimated miles left
A picture of a speedo => average speed

The TRUE Meaning of the ICON!

If you switch the iDrive into "Protected Executive Administration Mode" (sorry, can't reveal the secret button pressing sequence) you will reveal the true meaning of the icon:

Sorry

You have 2 odometer readings: overall, and trip. You can reset overall using the button on the instrument display, and you can reset trip information using the button on the end of the wiper control stalk. When you reset the trip data on the wiper stalk you will see the"1" come up on the display. Try it.

Awesome Z4 you are getting.
Did you have a service recently - they may have updated some of the software to add the icon to yoru display.

BTW - The Z4 is in the garage - and yes, it is the definition of awesomeness!
Its only the X3 I have been waiting months for.
I know they have done a few software updates so far on the Z and I end up gettign new icons / messages / symptoms on the dash and iDrive display.

With software, its so easy to change they cant resist making updates all the time. Some of them are even useful.

Ah, Z4 owner, I was too absorbed in my question and reading answers. Well please send a line if this appears on your X3.

Thank you. I could accept this. However for me the icon doesn't appear in the computer set-up display like the other icons you mentioned and just appeared. So I'm leading to the conclusion that this was a glitch and just came on for what ever cause of being off for 5 months.

Sorry - No Jag's currently in the stable (although I wouldn't mind a XKR-S), only Lotus and American Iron. Have had a few bolts shear off on the Seven lately.
