Steering issue with '16 X3

My wife's 5k miles X3 left her sit in the WalMart parking lot; lights came on the dash, and the wheel snapped in her hands. She turned off the car and restarted it, and the steering resumed working, but BMW didn't want her to drive it. It ended up on a flatbed to the dealer.
Does this sound familiar? Input welcome.

Are you saying the wheel forcibly turned 90 degrees without her input?
Maybe it is an active steering issue. Someone mentioned that when they had worked on their E90 that they left something disconnected or did something that cause the steering wheel to be off center horribly.
I wouldn't drive it either until it's fixed.

These cars are unnecessarily complicated.
