What if I get a puncture than ?

Ok, so now i know that I can push the pedal to the metal, but what should I do in case of a puncture.
I mean, I have these Run flat tires. But on the Autobahn, you are sometimes miles away from any town , and it is Sunday, so all garages are closed anyway.

How long can you keep driving with a puncture than , cause my trip is 1300 km in all. Can I just keep driving (at low speed of course).
Or is it better to take one of my wintertires along ? I have a bad feeling about these run flats. I cannot believe you can keep going on a tire without air....

But my summer wheels are 18 inch, and the winter wheels are 17 inch. Would that be a problem ?

thanks for your advise.

Most punctures are fairly slow.

I carry an electric pump in the boot (trunk) and just top up as/when needed before getting it repaired or replaced when home .

Run flats can be repaired contrary to what some dealers may say.

Tyre sealant is another option

If you have a catastrophic failure then you are f....ed However that is so rare as not be something to worry about

And that's why you have BMW emergency service to sort it out and get you home.

I think they reckon you only get a puncture every 80k miles on average these days.

I've had two punctures on run flats in my last two BMW's neither of which stranded me .. I just topped up the tyre with air every 40/50 miles and then had it plugged when I got home.

Enjoy your holiday Endre ...

thanks Andy. But it's no holiday, it's business
So I must be on time. I had my last puncture about 2 or 3 years ago, but having a decent sparetire, it was no problem.
The thought that I cannot keep driving to my destination without a lot of trouble, does bother me a bit. I have no electric pump or sealant, however I could try to buy it today.
But can I use a wintertire (17 inch) as a spare tire ? So driving with 3 wheels of 18 inch and one 17 inch wheel ?

The rolling circumference will be the same .. So no issue as an emergency but not ideal for long term

Also winter/summer tires have different compounds so handle differently

If necessary take it easy and you'll be ok

50 mph for 50 miles. If you go slower you will be able to squeeze more miles out of it. The whole idea is to keep heat away from the tire because that is what will cause the tire to disintegrate. I would suggest try and get a plug patch and fill it and keep an eye on it but keeping your speed below 50 mph and get it fixed on monday. Or you can use your winter tires all around and just burn through them.

As Andy_o suggests, get a tyre inflator and then you are covered both ways. I have non-runflats and keep a BMW emergency kit in the car, but I think I would have it even if I had runflats!

Few months ago I drove more than 100km distance on the highway with completely zero pressure. Usual speed 130km/h.
It was overnight trip, nowhere to stop.
Not any signs of tire damage. Tire puncture was fixed later and still running on this tire.

If the details of this story are correct and I would strongly recommend you replace that tyre as quickly as possible. You - and your family - could be driving on a timebomb. Driving on a runflat for that distance at that speed I would suggest it is almost certain you have internal mechanical problems with that tyre. And yes you can't see any physical damage on visual inspection. Short of a an X-ray or even MRI there's no way of confirming the internal integrity of the tyre.

Out of curiosity - who repaired the tyre - yourself or a tyre shop? If it was a tyre shop were they made aware of the distance and speed you had travelled on the flat runflat? If they had I would expect most reputable tyre shops would have refused to repair it.

Tony

I'm with Brissim on this one. Please replace that tire ASAP. It is NOT safe.

The reason many tyre places will not repair a run flat is because they don't show when the sidewall has lost its strength, but running for even 10km on zero pressure means your tyre is now dangerous.

Get it swapped asap.

It is a good idea to also carry a Plug Kit. Easy to use

I have a plug kit, and an electric inflator; I had 3 punctures during my first year, the 3 of them were very slow, and were easily dealt with with the inflator -- don't drive like an idiot on it as it /will/ lose pressure gradually, and stop to top it up if needs be.
The 3 times, the tires were repaired, and I was quite confident I hadn't damaged the walls.

No punctures on my second set of tires so far -- /me touches wood!
