Navigation algorithms and better in the 2020s?

I found that the nav in my 2017 BMW was not reliable. It has led me to wrong places and bad routes. I find myself using Waze on my phone instead. Now my lease is running out. Is the nav algorithm in the 2020 X3 any better? is it updated? Does it use Here technology? Thanks!

They improve all the time. But the map data needs to be good in your area, and they seems to update it 3-4 times a year.
And the HW is two generations up between -17 and -20, so it's most likely going to be better for you.

I agree it's likely the map data. I've had two F25s in the UK over the last 8 years, I've been very happy with the BMW Nav. I tried Waze a few years ago and didn't get on with it, I'm sure it's better now seeing how people like it so much.

I'm surprised that iDrive nav has led you to wrong places. I'm not surprised it's taken you on bad routes. I think that there's a general consensus that Waze has the best nav algorithms out there and does the best job routing around traffic. With 2020 models, you can run Waze with CarPlay on the full central display and it works really well. Unfortunately, you lose HUD nav instructions which are uber useful imo. Like most things, there's a trade-off.

maybe there is hope for nav

thanks everyone. To be more specific, I live in NYC area and the first horrible route was through Brooklyn. Not exactly the uncharted suburbs! The second time was in Fredericksburg VA, again should have been known and Google maps got me right there after BMW sent me 30 minutes out of my way. About Waze...yes, it is the best but I have a Droid and BMW is the only car maker who refused to add android auto so I would be stuck with BMW's nav. Besides, it is so integrated, it needs to work for 60-70,000 USD.

joel, have you checked the iDrive nav settings to be sure that 'fastest route' is selected and that roads to avoid are properly set?
