Garage Door Opener Question

My 2016 X3 went into production today so I do not have it yet to answer my own question.

Will the integrated garage door opener open the garage door if the ignition is off?

Due to having moved recently there is no space in my garage for any cars. Therefore, the X3 will be parked in the driveway for a few months into the future. For security reasons I do not want to program the opener if someone can open my garage door simply by breaking into my car.

To my surprise, the integrated Homelink opener in my Lexus RX350 works with the ignition off so this got me curious what BMW does.

My 2014 requires that you at least have the ignition on accessory power for the garage door opener to work...

^Same with my 2016. But in every car I have ever had, the homelink works with the ignition off! This is my first BMW and at first I didn't "get" it or like it but then I realized it is a good security feature!

Exactly! Great security feature.

Works as intended.

Do you still want "convenience" over "security"?

really surprised that JDM manufacturers are not thoughtful enough to consider putting a time out function on them.

Every so often I will park on my driveway and forget to open the garage after turning the car off. If I remember quickly enough, it will still work. Not sure what the exact amount of time is, but it's quick (maybe a minute or less).

Thanks,
dr

I have had the same experience as denrusso - the unit remains active for a short time after turning off the engine. Haven't timed it, but I think it could be for less than 15 seconds.

My 2010 S4 had the same behavior as the X3. In Toyotas that I have come across, the units were always operational - basically as dangerous as leaving the remote in the car.

As pokerface said, it would be good if the unit could have power retention for a limited time (like with the windows), or perhaps retain the power until the driver's door is opened.
