Buy used w/ 110k miles??
Hi,
A quick search didn't show me answer. Apologize if this is redundant thread. I am looking at purchasing 2014 X3 xDrive35i w/ 110,000 miles on it. It seems like it's in really good condition. I am a car guy and do most of my own repairs. This car, however, would be for my mother. I have a new 2020 X3 M40i and love it. I know every car can have specific issues depending on history, conditions, etc., but in general:
I am aware of valve cover leak issues. Price is $13k. Two owners. Clean CarFax.

Access to service records? Highway vs in town mileage? Definitely need to check if the ZF8 transmission has been serviced? Anddddd.... consistent oil changes?

In my experience with BMW's at that mileage, you're going to need to look at all the critical maintenance items to ensure long term reliability. Refresh or replace those critical items whether they are bad or not.

thats high mileage for that year. How many miles does your mom drive a year? What options does the X3 have?
If she doesnt drive much and she really likes the colors, it probably is fine. But if she does drive a lot, I would look for a lower mileage X3.

Currently, no issues. Lower mileage, seven years of documentation, I'm the second owner and have owned it for the past seven years. |

Control and/or thrust arms (fluid filled bushings begin to leak) shocks/struts OFHG, VCG, maybe even oil pan gasket water pump & thermostat as preventative maint, if it's not already been replaced fluids: tranny, transfer case, 2 differentials spark plugs, if not already done serpentine belt and tensioner/pulley assembly Any of above one can DIY, but the water pump/stat is bear of a job. shocks/struts not all that easy either. |

I would add coils as well. Plugs are nearly at their second replacement mark (every 60k) and coils will likely fail soon if not already replaced. For the valve cover gasket, you'll want a new valve cover at that mileage. The PCV rubber valve is built into the cover and tends to fail around 100k, which can damage the front/rear main seals as crankcase pressure tries to bent through those locations. Cost for parts will be around 500-600 USD for a new cover with gasket. BIGGEST thing is oil change frequency. If they went 15,000miles between changes then walk away. If they went 7,500 or less, and changed at least once per year then there should still be life in it. The service we're talking about isn't cheap though. Have it inspected by a good BMW specialist and you'll get a laundry list of items most likely. You can negotiate down the price and then get the work done or DIY it. Last thing you want us to drop 13k just to spend another 7 on service and parts.

As it happens, I found a RAV4 with 80k miles +4 more years of warranty for $16k. I would rather do the X3.. but for Ma, going to go as bullet proof as possible. I am expecting to get the Rav4 tomorrow AM. If it falls through; I will let you know.

i/we used to own a rav4... 2011...
my ex drove the wheels off it until she totaled it just before 90K... without question was the most reliable car with the least amount of maintenance i've ever owned .... fuel, fluids, wipers, and air. |
