coolant low indication
So that's what I am getting. I'm going to add Bimmer coolant and distilled water to fill. Does my 2011 X3 see this performed-to-perfection maintenance procedure, and automatically stop telling me the coolant is low, or do I need to perform some black magic sorcery ritual to make it disappear?
Love the car...... some of the things it makes me do, not so much. |

Just top it up and the message will go away.
The coolant went somewhere. The underbody panels on our F25 prevent most drips from getting to the driveway/garage floor, where a fluid leak may be obvious. It may be worth some time on a lift to do a visual inspection, as well as a pressure test. I recently had a coolant leak which resulted in the expansion tank being replaced on my 35i. Ran into a problem with my old 2011 where I was very slowly losing coolant and every three or four weeks I would get the low coolant alarm. On the third trip to the dealer they replaced the reservoir and that solved the problem. It apparently had a very tiny crack on its underside and the leak was so slow it was not visible.

I also had a slow coolant leak recently which turned out to be the coolant Reservoir as well on my 2012 n52 model. The leak was very hard to detect. I couldn't find a crack in the tank, even when it was out of the car, but I replaced it anyway and problem solved. This is a very common problem and BMW designed new reservoirs because of it (the last number is a new revision).

I had the same problem as the 2 people above with my 2013 X3. The dealer pressure tested the coolant reservoir to find the leak and then replaced it under warranty

The crack is typically inside the reservoir. It'll leak out the sensor plug hole which typically shouldn't be wet. It's easy to diy if you are out of warranty. Dealer will want around $350 IIRC. Part is around $110 on ECS.

Same thing on my '08 X3
This often happens on my '08 X3. Low coolant light, I bring it in to the shop and the say it is not low at all but they flush it and refill it anyway. Light stays off for a while then eventually comes back on. Have done that three times now. Possibly bad sensor?
