New TPMS and winter tyres

I will find out later today, if a set of winter wheels & tyres have the TYRE PRESSURE MEASURING SENSORS(TPMS).
If as i suspect were bought by the owner a couple of years ago for his pre lci X3, then how or what do i do about having the sensors fitted by a local tyre shop.
Which sensor should i buy?
Any experience of the lci system?
Will the system in my car error everytime if i don't fit TMPS enabled wheels?
Your experiences very much welcomed...

Tbh

It's a minefield buying them online and trying to get the correct part number

In the end I bit the bullet and got haggling with my Bmw dealer who ending up fitting the new sensors as part of my normal winter wheel swop for a cost not too much more than what I could get an Indy to do it for

I also kept the old sensors so now have both

A "good" local tyre shop will sell you - mine did, incl. programming - pirate sensors that can be programmed to your vehicle. Two winter and two summer seasons experience.

So the seller tells me he had them on a 2013 X3, and his vehicle doesn't show tyre pressures. Therefore he has the older system and i will need to fit sensors before winter arrives.
I wasn't aware they need to be programmed? Or should i buy them directly from BMW to avoid any compatibility issues?

BMW Originals don't need to be programmed - however the vehicle does - as per manual.

Still - it should be possible to have tire shop do the programming - both for sensors and vehicle, at a lower cost.

Once the vehicle has been programmed, it will sense any of the two sets - summer/winter.

Probable life for batteries are about 5 years - if summers only. If also winter - probably like 7 years. Transmission only with rolling vehicle.

@tjalle - please excuse my questions, as i know nothing of these sensors.
Are you saying even if a buy BMW originals from BMW,the sensors won't need programming, but the car will need some sort of programming to "see" the sensors when the winter set are mounted?
Is this something i can do from the iDrive console as in reset the TMPS system as i do now when checking/changing pressures, or something else?

Yes, you do it from iDrive. Not as if reset pressure - but not to elaborate. Manual?

It's very simple .. Press set tyre pressures on i drive then drive down the road and it calibrates itself within a mile or so

No biggie

Ahh ok, thanks guys. The deal has been done and i will be picking up the wheel set in the next 10 days or so.
As you both suggested - i will talk to my local dealer and look online for the best prices on BMW (hud) sensors before autumn

Finally managed to pick these up yesterday. The wheels are in very good condition and the tyres have 6mm tread.
Will add some pictures if i can work out how to do that from my phone.

it's nearing winter, and the summer tyres are getting low on tread. rang my local BMW tyre mechanic and he has quoted £400 for supplying & fitting of the TPMS sensors to my winter wheels.
is this a good deal, or can i go elsewhere?

Our TPMS also does not show the actual pressures - I understand that it can be programmed to show them but not by BMW. Still works fine with both summer and winter tyres.

The LCi X3 does show the actual pressure, hence the requirement for TMPS sensors.

I shopped around various Bmw dealers, independent tyre suppliers and eBay sellers.

I ended up getting them from my local main dealer fitted and mounted as part of my annual switchover from summers to winters

Cost me a few quid more than I could have got elsewhere (Indy)

I think I paid less than 300 in all

Well worth shopping around .. And don't forget the valves currently on the wheel set have a value that can be offset against the new ones

Edited to add

German eBay had some very competitive prices and sellers conversed in English .. About 120-160 for the valves depending on correct ones

Problem was Indy tyres places wanted a fortune to fit them .. So it was only marginally more expensive just to suck up and get Bmw uk dealer supply and fit.

I do have a very good relationship with my local dealer who are always up for a haggle !

A local BMW dealer have supplied and fitted the TMPS sensors/valves at a cost of £360.
More than I wanted to pay, but it's a good way of building up my relationship with them, as I foresee my vehicle being maintained by them whilst it has the 5 year service pack/warranty. Two neighbours recommended them to me, for their excellent customer service ..... I digress ....
I was offered the £50 switchover tyre service and the storage of winter/summer wheels at an annual cost of £60, but being a tight git, and plenty of storage at home decided to swap them over myself.
The trolley jack is no issue, but I would still like to purchase a scissor jack for long journeys where taking a spare wheel would be prudent ( drive across to Europe etc)
I can't see anyone selling a F25 specific jack, so wonder if one from an E53 or E71 would be okay?

Hi folks, my first post here. So my local BMW dealer has just fitted my winter wheels (from my pre LCI F25 X3) to my newer post LCI F25 X3 and the TPMS senses are not compatible with the newer car. The dealer gave 3 options:

1) Live with it

2) buy a new set of wheels

3) Buy a new set of sensors with no guarantee that they will fit the old rims with no option to return them.

I asked the guy to check with BMW UK if the new sensors will fit the old rims. Surely they should know? The rims are the 17 inch 305 Y spokes. Can any of you learned chaps advise if the new sensors will fit and what the expected swap is likely to cost?

Cheers,
Steve

I have purchased three sets of OEM TPMS sensors from https://www.tpmsdirect.com/ with no issues. I provide them year make model and vin in the comments section after choosing from their menu. I always use the original brand that manufacturers use (without bmw logo) and they are pretty cheap compared to the same part from the dealer. I did this for my 2012 x3 which had a faulty one when I bought it and for two of my Mercedes vehicles. The most recent one for my x3 just reset with I drive after a few miles

My set of winter wheels/tires have no TP sensors. Provided your government authorities do not object, the only issues are an error message upon startup and a small orange tire symbol while driving - no bells or whistles. Assuming tire pressures are checked now and then, it's an inexpensive way to go and one can forget about TPMS compatibility issues.

In the UK the TPMS system is legally required to work if fitted. The main dealer rang today to say the new type TPMS sensors wont't fit my old rims. The guy suggested I buy a new set of winter wheels, I suggested he buy my car back. You're right, I could just live with it but if I have a system fitted I want it to work.I will check out some local specialists to see what they can come up with. I'll let you know what happens.
