Besides, paint quality - I know I am neat picking as I am talking paint inside door/boot, but it is not as good as the other cars.

What are you trying to tell me is that BMW had lower their standards for the X3.
If you watched the show, the whole paint shop at the plant in SC had to change when they added the X3. They now combine the primer coat with the regular coat of paint (one step, instead of 2). I wonder if this affects the paint quality.

I think it does. BMW's paint isn't near as durable as other brands. It chips and scratches easily. The process seems rushed so they can push more vehicles through the line.

I think newer cars manufacturers are skimping on the paint job, my 2009 forester has poorer quality compared to previous Subaru scratches and knick easily in metallic silver. That's why I think get plain white non metallic ain't such a bad idea for if one were respray in the future the affected parts it would be easier to match.

That would be the final clear coat, not the underlying primer and paint though -- right? I think there were no changes to the final clear coat process.

They showed the company in the show. the seat company is called Lear, and they have a location only a mile or so from the BMW factory in SC.

Correct, Lear makes many seats for BMW across many different models and in different countries

I have not been able to get info on any changes on the X3 line yet, but as for BMW paint in German and South African factories, its exactly the same as is used on many German and Japanese makes and comes from the same paint factories. ( Eg VW, Mercedes, Toyota, Ford Europe, Renault )

Some use a different Clear coat depending on their application technology ( powder, wet. ect)

BMW factories are either supplied by BASF or Standox (Dupont)

Did you get to watch the National Geographic video? It gave a pretty detailed picture of the painting process.

E90Fleet is in South Africa - they may not have the channel there.

BTW, just so everyone knows - E90Fleet is quite a distiguished gentleman. He has been on these boards as long as I have and everything he says is based on fact and research (and knowledge). In other words, he is the man.

Indeed. In fact, I once said that Lotus7 reminded me of E90Fleet.

+1. I have National Geographic channel, but I don't think this episode will air soon. They are still showing old episodes here.

Hi LEDZEP, thanks for the words

We have the Euro National Geographic Channel here so will only get to see it when Europe does or Amazon.com gets the DVD

What Gives...

I've always heard during the break-in period not to get the car over 100 mph or over 4/5 rpms for the first 1,500 miles... at the end of the show didn't that lady get the car up to 100 mph!!! What's up with that.

Pick your battles I guess...

The powertrain was probably under very little load as it was on rollers and not actually fighting rolling resistance / wind.

100 MPH in that car is only 2500RPM roughly anyway, it will do no harm at that speed at all.

7 yr old son watches this constantly

I recorded this on my DVR, and my 7 year old son watches this as much as he can. In fact, he now prefers watching this instead of Spongebob.

He has seen this, start to finish, probably 15 times now.

He can even imitate the German accent of the guy that says:

"sheet metal is heavy, sheet metal is sharp."

I think its the robots that fascinate him the most. He loves the paint shop scenes.

When he can drive, he wants a Red convertible BMW, with a "screen" (his word for iDrive), but one that can go off-road, like the X3.

I told him when he can drive, there probably will be a hologram, not a screen.

A friend's partner builds Minis at the Oxford plant in the UK. He always laughs at the running in advice, noting that the first thing they do with the cars when they run off the production line is 'red line' them on the test track.

I've never paid too much attention to it. Its not a warranty condition and I don't keep my cars long enough to care about any longevity issues.
