Correct way to apply parking brake (automatic)

This might just be me having never owned an automatic but please bear with me.

Generally when I come to a stop in a parking place I press the P button on top of the gear selector. However I have noticed when I park on my driveway (mild downward incline toward the garage door) that when I then take my foot off the brake pedal the car rolls forward a couple of inches. Is this normal? Pretty sure it also happens when I use the P button behind the gear lever (the one that pulls the brake pedal away from your foot). And I don't believe I get the roll if I turn the engine off whilst I still have my foot on the pedal (and then remove it).

Thanks
Simon

Could it be that you're confusing the Park gear with the barking break?

Pulling the P lever (as opposed to just putting the car in P gear) should stop it from rolling.

Put the vehicle in park, leave your foot on the brake pedal, put on the electric parking brake, then remove your foot from the brake pedal. You really don't want the vehicle rolling on the parking paw every time you turn it off.

This! Same concept when you apply the handbrake!

Or you could just make life easy for yourself and use the auto-hold function of the parking brake.

We use autohold as a matter of course ... never need to touch the parking brake button (so long as you have your seat belt on)! It does it it self.

Yes auto-hold. I don't understand why some don't like it unless theirs doesn't work properly. I don't find it "grabs" when maneuvering and it makes life so very easy.

Auto-hold does work but I don't always remember to turn it on. Rather annoying it doesn't remember last setting.

What difference is P mode to Neutral on the shifter?

I tried again just now parking on a level space outside Wickes. Engaged parking brake, set gearstick to P and as I lifted my foot off the brake pedal there was a definite lurch. Not as prominent as the scenario I mentioned in my OP and may not actually be the car moving but the brakes biting. But still feels weird to me coming from a manual car.

Auto-hold? I'm also migrating from a 6MT and am annoyed that the X3 rolls back a couple inches when I leave it in "P" on my hilly driveway.

And no, I have obviously not read the manual.

I don't hate Auto-Hold but using it in stop and go heavy traffic where you have to actually press on the gas pedal to get rolling is a PITA (as opposed to just easing off the brake).

You can turn on the auto-hold anytime. So rather than messing around with what you are doing, simply turn on the auto-hold when you have brought the car to a halt. It will still engage.
