Steering wheel clicking noise!
Just picked up my X3 2 weeks ago. Currently at less than 400 miles, and the steering wheel is having some weird clicking noise when I turn the wheels. It happens mostly when I make a left turn at 6PM part of the rotation, and sounds like when you turn the dial on the Chronograph watch. Here's the video I took. The sound is louder in the video because as you can hear, the background noise is pretty loud too.
Anybody had the same issue? Last edited by VinX3; 02-15-2015 at 03:10 PM.. |

I have the same on mine. Not quite as pronounced as yours but the same noise. Thought it might be the cold temps and would go after a bit of use.

Mine is not loud either. As you notice in the video, the background noise is very loud also. Is your car new? |

Yep, my car is new - received it about 4 weeks ago and it's done about 600 miles so far. It's an SE so just has the standard multi-function wheel.

From my research, it can be the slip ring right behind the steering wheel is making the noise, and a lubricating it will get rid of the noise. I hope this is the issue. I'm going to bring it to the service center to have it checked out.

Took it into the service center to have it diagnosed today. My SA told me it's the clock spring in the steering column. I'm not the 1st customer that has this problem. He mentioned that there's a TSB.

Just a quick update:
They tried to perform a TSB in which they push in a pin that sticks out, but that didn't help. Their next step is replacing the clock spring. I hope this will solve the issue. |

Let me know how it goes - mine's still doing it. Just creating a snagging list before it goes in for several things sorting out. I also have a noisy aircon fan which probably just needs lubricating and my auto wipers don't seem to be sensitive enough.

My SA just called to inform that replacing the clock spring got rid of the noise. They still need to reprogram the car. I thought the clock spring is just a component with just wires. Do we really need to reprogram?

The noise is gone! However, I drove home today and noticed the heated steering button doesn't light up now. They left some scratches on the steering column as well... Ahhhh
