power lift gate retrofit

I know it's possible... just buy the parts and slap em on but what do you guys think it would cost?

In the US the power lift gate is $500... north of the border it is only available in a $4000 package.

I'd figure on some computer programming time as well as parts/install.

I also would like to retrofit the power tail gate if possible at some point later.

I checked parts needed for a retrofit,

Retaining mount rear part no 51247262179 and 51247262180
Spindle drive part no 51247232003 and 51247232004
Auto trunk lid mechanism 51247269544
Holder upper section part no 51247266439 and 51247266440
Trunk lid power lock drive part no 51247249578
Trunk unlocking switch part no 61319200316
Switch trunk lid part no 61319162643
ECU rear function module part no 61357304629
Lower tail lid trim panel part no 51497260242

This is possible only if the wiring is already in place. If not a new wiring loom would also be needed. Reprogramming of the idrive system also would have to be done.
From retrofitting several options to my old E53 X5 the wiring maybe already in place.

Y'all are dreaming on the retrofit -- it's gonna be outrageous. If you had the cash it'd take to do that, you'd have added it in the first place and gotten some other stuff with it.

i'd love to retrofit mine to remove it - i was going to order my X3 with the convenience package split out so i was not going to get the power liftgate, but i was talked into it - I have accidentally opened it into my garage door 3 times, 1 time resulting in a small liftgate dent.

argh

not that I can tell.... at least not on my 2011 unless something changed. Its the one thing I should have not ordered, and the worst part is I should have gone with my original plan. Oh well, its not a big problem the dent is only about 1 inch

^That's what *dent wizards* are for. I went grocery shopping the very day I got the X3 and somebody put a dent into the door on the driver side. The next day I called the dealer and they hooked me up with the wizard - it's like it never happened and it was cheap.

You can set the maximum opening height in iDrive. That and skittle awareness make this super convenient feature. But I agree.....I wouldn't spend money on a retrofit. All cars brought into Taiwan come with it, and it is a nice touch....but pretty minor detail!

Any update? Has someone successfully retrofitted his car with it?
Just purchased a used F25 not fitted with it and I really wish it had this option.
I test drove one that had it and I really liked it.

I wish I didnt have it as part of the comfort package, it's definitely a liability. Must cost loads to retrofit nothing you are missing.

Tested the behavior on an X4 and there are some counter-force sensors in the system (duh!). You can easily stop the tailgate with your hand as it opens. Of course, there will be some amount of opening force from the tailgate, there will probably be dents if it hits something but for safety reasons, the tailgate will not force itself to a complete open if it hits an obstacle, it will just stop.

To sum it up - If you see that the tailgate is about to crash into anything, just stop it with your hand. Thats what I would do.

Not so fast, sometimes you are not in the rear, my first scratch and dent my pals kid opened it from the driver side and was in a tight space it stopped but damage done.

Wouldn't the same thing have happened had the kid flung open a passenger door into the adjacent vehicle or wall or whatever? At some point, situational awareness (and reasonable caution) must come into play. Regards. -scr

You're right of course. Not much to do under those circumstances...

You are right, I was aware as they checked the car as I supervised, forgot there was a trunk button and could not react fast enough, I am more keen now. I wish that button could be disabled. What I do I by default leave the trunk height on 2nd lowest setting, another hazard underground parking with sprinkler systems

I understand that some of you don't like (hate?) it, however we are expecting a child and it would greatly help my wife... Hence I am really keen at doing it!

So no-one seems to have retrofitted it yet.
