X3 for the wife?

Why do do many people on here qualify their purchase of an X3 by saying it\'s for their wife. It\'s usually not relevant to the topic being discussed and these people seem to know an awful lot about their spouse\'s car. Is it that the X3 is not considered manly enough. Am I too sensitive? Am I crazy? All three? Curious as to other\'s thoughts.

I bought an X3 "for my wife" because, (1) it's her car, (2) she needs an AWD 4-door, (3) she likes mid-size SUV's, and (4) my car is a 128i. Having said all that, I find myself driving her car more than mine lately, because it's more practical for hauling people and Christmas gifts!

By the way, I'd buy an X3 for myself in a heart beat if they made it in a manual transmission for the U.S. market.

There are a lot of “is it a chick car” threads.

The answer is quite simple.
Yes, it’s a chick car….when a girlie girl is driving it, and it’s a manly man’s car when a manly man is driving it.

It's avaliable here in Europe with a manual stick, but only with the 20i and 20d engines. The problem is that the manual gearbox has got lots of bad review. Everybody tells you to get the auto because it is so much better.

Way too sensitive, IMO. This from a guy who ordered an x3 "for the wife."

Gee, my wife hasn't driven my X3 yet, but she's OK with me driving her new Subie Outback - especially if I include the touchless carwash on my travels.

My x3 is for the wife, and for my little girl. . Not that it is not manly, it is just a good option for a family car to truck kids with.

That's interesting. I wonder what transmission they use in it? Over the years I've owned several BMWs with stick shift, including my current 128i, but never had a bad one.

Funny, I am actually considering getting one for my wife next year, just waiting on the X3M since I maybe driving it once in a while too. But I have to wait & see how it compares to the next M3 & which one she likes more, nothing's wrong with being a car for the mrs.

It's a six speed manual. Don't know anything about it except the standard transmission ratio:
1: 4.11
2: 2.25
3: 1.40
4: 1.00
5: 0.80
6: 0.66
R: 3.73

Your wife has had the baby Steve?
Congratulations!

I can see you making some lightning fast trips down to the 711 at 2am for nappies or talc in the 1m.

Our X3 is primarily for the wife as she does most of the child ferrying.
I drive it when we all go out and it is better than any other family car we have owned in each of luxury, performance and handling.
As "my" car only has two seats, I don't see this formula changing anytime soon.

The manual has had good feedback from members on this forum (no complaints at all from what I remember) and I liked it too when I tried it for a test drive. I just thought the auto was really impressive and preferred it as it's easier. Reviewers often blindly dismiss options and make silly assumptions without giving any reason and often after only spending a few hours in the car they are reviewing. VDC as a "must have" option is another example of the nonsense they come up with

Yes, an Engine is a "must have" option, and brakes, and steering, but everything else is a luxury.

As one with a y chromosone, i just traded my 128i for an x3 3.5. Don't need a large suv like the x5, this has better gas mileage, fits in spaces easier, and probably goes faster than my 128i. I wanted awd, had a pilot, it got too large as well. Looked at crv and rav 4, wanted a luxury small suv. Infinity 35 was not space efficient in my mind.
