Very sorry to hear that AJW . Was yours built at about the same time as johnbmw6? You must have a few miles on it by now?

It was built 2nd or 3rd week in August, it has 1500 miles on the clock.

This is really bad, 6 weeks or so Older than mine, I got the ONLY steering rack in europe , I hope they can order you one as the Control unit is NOT able to be fitted, you need the whole rack.

Will have to wait till Monday, will soon see how long it takes them to find the problem. There may have been a bad batch of steering racks fitted, how long before another pops up, maybe more we don't know about.

I am afraid the problem showed up 6 months ago This Campaign No: 11V341000 NHTSA should help you at the dealership, because I have had some bad experience with BMW UK this week
The technical Dept was not going to allow the dealership to order the full rack, they wanted just the control module ordered, this can NOT be ordered here.
The full rack is whats needed.
After much tooing and frowing I got hold of Mrs Mira Grey ( customer services Senior Manager) and she seems to be on the ball finally.

There are 2 steering rack part numbers, one with variable sport steering which is what i might need, the part numbers changed from 09/11. Looks like they are using updated racks now, but is it the new or old that are faulty ?.

Mine was build week 5 in February whic was before the recall in April. Mine was not supposedly affected by the recall as it was manufactured before the faulty components were installed. Sounds much bigger than even BMW expected. My service dept foreman said he has never seen anything like my situation in 30 plus years working on BMWs

its threads like this that is turning me away from the X3 as my next car... The board is filled with brand new cars with too many issues to be just a coincidence.

I hope your car will be fixed asap OP.

Sorry to hear that more steering problems are occurring. Getting worried now as my car was built between AJW and JB6's builds. Do you all have variable sports steering?

I don't to raise your personal level of hysteria too high but you might want to read posts on AudiWorld about about the Q5, or MB World about the GLK. In fact the news out there has been so bad that I would suggest not buying anything until you stop reading complaints about failures on the various car boards. After all it's far more significant to read about a few failures on boards like this than check on the statistical data on JD Power and TrueDelta.

Good question. Doesn't the M Sport 30d/35d come with VSS as standard?

+1 if you don't want to take the risk of buying a new car because someone somewhere has reported a problem with it, then you'll never be able to buy any new car. Buy some socks or a hat instead. Both much less likely to experience issues
