F25 water pump lifespan

Hello all, my wife drives a 2011 X3 with 58K miles on the clock. I'm wondering if you guys/gals have any input on the water pump longevity? It looks like a stand alone electric water pump design, similar to what's in my 335I. The 335I's water pump was good for 75K miles. They all failed in that range. Wondering what to expect with this car.

same rules apply for the x3 35i as the 335...at least for the electric water pump.

I disagree. I talked to my good friend and long time BMW tech advisor just last week about this. He said that he had not seen ANY N55 water pump failures as they were redesigned from the N54 days. He said the N54's all go way before 100k.

Itīs no reason - and not common - for waterpumps to last only 75k miles.

Supplier screw up!

New supplier or just new/modified design - with heavy control from BMW.

I replaced my waterpump on my 2011 X3 35i around 100k...would rather replace it preventatively than have it fail and leave me stranded. I do like to gamble, just not with my engine.

It's the same p/n for N54 & N55.
Maybe redesigned, but then it's redesigned for both as they share same p/n.
Sh1tty design nonetheless any way you slice it. It's ok to have cooling according to engine load, but not cool to have it fail out of the blue, being a royal PITA to replace it and costing how much? I really like the simplicity of belt driven WP from operation to replacing to cost.

Can?t remember exact mileage but it was in the 50?s . Was on the way to a wedding and it pooped out a mile from the exit. Yellow, then red, no power. No warning before that day and time.

You have the N52 like me. Wonder if it's a bit more durable on these engines?

BMW has gone with a traditional mechanical water pump on the new 6 cylinder engine (B58?) that has replaced the N55. I take that as sort of an admission of guilt ;-)

Correct. But the oil pump is changed to an electronically driven pump (similar to the electronically driven WP on N54/55 engines) as opposed to chain diven. Hope they don't go bust that soon. The old school chain driven oil pumps lasted the life of the car (usually)

Aren't the water pumps different between the N52/N55

I've got platinum warranty until 100k. I've done a water pump and thermostat on my wife's N54 335i a couple of years ago. DIY is only about $400-500. It wasn't fun but it's not that bad. Changing the valvecover gasket is worse.

I looked at it with the thought of doing it myself, but it looked like a nightmare of a job to me. I could hardly get a finger on it.
