Break in procedures for 12' 28i
Newbie here, can I get suggestions on breaking the car in properly and if I need to do a break in oil change? Bought the car with 200 miles and currently at 300.
Thank you! |

Do what it says in the owner's manual.
No offense intended, but why do people always pop up asking this question? There are perfectly good instructions in the manual. And, as a general rule, it's probobly a better idea to trust what the design engineers put in the manual over what some guy you don't know and have never met says on a BMW forum. |

The post was in reference to a break in oil change and at what mileage it should be done..apologies, should've specified that.
The manual says to get the oil changed every 15k, I doubt you wait until then to do an oil change lol |

I'm a very traditional maintenance guy. Oil changes every 3k miles, etc. However, new cars just don't need it. Do what the manual says and if you don't drive much, change the oil every 6 months or even once/year.
For break in, the cars are tested at the factory at 100mph + on rollers. Just be sensible with it. |

Since I have two vehicles, my X3 only has 9500 miles on it after almost 11 months of ownership. My service rep suggested that I bring it in for it's first oil change at 12-months, regardless of mileage, since it will be a while until it hits 15000. Seems reasonable advice, and it costs me nothing, so I plan on doing that.

I am not a forum hater, so I will give you my $0.02...that's all it's worth. I am old school, will always change oil myself at 4k, cheap insurance and it's a weekend pass time. I understand why many would challenge this routine, especially with the progression of synthetic oils. I do sincerely believe, however, you should not take your car from 0-15k on the factory fill. If it were my car, I would change it within the first 3k miles of ownership....then make the call if you want to simply rely on the service plan from there on out. Note, BMW covers an initial oil change on the 1M at 1,200 miles, and the motor is essentially a flashed N54....

I was told to come back when my first mileage turns 30 000 km (around 18 000 miles) by my BMW dealer.
Don't see why I would come earlier since the car is under a 4-year warranty. I think they know what they do.... I have a 20d engine. |
