Yeah, my wife bought a 2001 E39 new and didn't get the $500 Xenon upgrade, even though a recommended them. At least it came with projector type low beams and with some current technology LEDs in them, light output is pretty good without causing glare to oncoming traffic since the projector has cutoff shields. I've seen some F25s with LEDs in the Halogen reflector and the glare was obnoxious, YMMV.

I did find a pair of rare E39 factory Xenon driving lights that replace the fog lights and man are those things bright.
