Mystery behind the panel

So I'm poking around my new to me 2015 x3 last night and open the panel on the left side of the car in the trunk (where the tools are). I see some silver metal box (what's that?) and next to it a small-ish black box with a removable cover just begging me to slide it up and see what's underneath it. There's what looks to be a rechargeable/replaceable battery (sort of like a cell phone battery but bigger). What is that??

The silver metal box is your amp and the black box next to it is your TCB(telematics) module.
