Arrow BMW Targets 25,000 X3 Sales in US in 2011. To Get Custom Order Exclusive Options.

BMW is shooting to sell 25,000 X3s in the U.S. for the 2011 calendar year, according to Insideline. For comparison, BMW sold 17,622 X3s in 2008. Also, custom ordered X3s will have exclusive options not available to off-the-lot models.

Quote:
BMW is planning a big sales push for the redesigned 2012 BMW X3. If all things go right with our crazy, mixed-up economy, the automaker is hoping to move 25,000 X3s in the United States during the 2011 calendar year, Tom Kowaleski, director of communications for BMW USA, told Inside Line. The redesigned crossover hits U.S. dealers late this year.

That's a huge jump from the current pace (3,439 X3s were sold in the first half of 2010), but not such a leap from past years -- BMW sold us 17,622 X3s in 2008. And the company is on pace to sell well over 30,000 units of the larger X5 in the U.S. in 2010.

BMW figures the increased size of the second-generation X3 will be a significant draw for U.S. buyers. Yeah, yeah, bigger isn't always the way to go anymore, but the interior volume of the 2012 X3 is evidently right on par with the first-gen X5, and you know how much we all liked that vehicle.

Likely you've heard that BMW will use the X3 to launch its build-to-order program in the U.S. Mind you, you can already special-order just about any vehicle you want, but most Americans don't; they just buy something out of dealer inventory. Since the X3 will be built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, BMW can promise a 1-week turnaround on orders.

As further encouragement, Kowaleski says BMW will exclusive options for built-to-order X3s -- special paint and trim options that you won't be able to get if you buy one off a dealer lot.

One particularly nice (read: lucrative) side effect that BMW anticipates from the build-to-order program is that consumers will spend more liberally on options in order to get their X3 just so.

If you live in Greer, that may be the case....

+1 for the diesel.

Its not that they are economical, or have more torque but that I don't have to get out of the car to fill up so often. Laziness = luxury.

Nice idea BMW - 1 week is just amazing turn around time. This will reduce the need for dealers to hold onto inventory and discount the cars.

I would really consider an X3 if they were priced right.

BMW has significantly jacked up the prices on just about everything in the past 6 years.

+1. I would also consider an X3 if it has a better design.

The dollar has gotten weaker and materials prices has significantly gone up. On top of that BMW is cheaper than in the US than anywhere else in the world.

There isn't much they can do about the US/CAD laws. They could put them in the bumper, but what would the LCI consist of then?

Working at a BMW dealership for 5.5 years Ive seen 3 manual X3s, and 2 manual X5s. Very very few of them out there.

I hope this thing sells EXTREMELY well. I cant wait for the push to custom order

I know I am probably in the minority, but I custom order specifically to do the opposite. That is, I option the car more sparsely than the ones typically found in dealer stock.

E90 335i is $40,600 while F10 535i is $49,600. X5 35i is $45,800, so I would figure $35k-$37k for the X3 35i. And less for the 28i of course. That's not very scientific but probably reasonable for an estimate.

X3 Pricing

I have had 3 X3's and was going to replace one with the new design, but pricing will be an issue. I will be comparing the price (what the dealer will sell one for), to the ED price of a 535ix (which carries over a 5K discount from MSRP when you include BMWCCA incentives) I wonder if BMW is going to be careful on positioning the vehicle.

2011 X3 - What no manual transmission available????

I currently own a 2004 X3 with 6 speed manual ( my 4th BMW with manual) and the transmission makes the vehicle a pleasure to drive.

There are numerous images of the 2011 X3 with 6 speed manual. Why is manual not available even though it's available for the European market?

Any suggestions? Is it possible to special order for the US/Canadian market?

I think the problem is that 90% of USA buyers of this vehicle will be soccer moms who would be mystified by the presence of a third pedal.

I've been considering an F25 X3 for my growing family, but the lack of a manual option gives me pause (never bought a car with an auto transmission before). If BMW NA would offer it with the DCT dual clutch automatic, I might consider that.
