Daytime running lights

Hi,

May have been asked before but here goes...have a 18dSE, standard lights.

Only way I can get daytime lights on is to select "on" in the iDrive but this leaves dipped lights and rears on full time, auto lights selected. Already had a bulb blow. Anyone knownif this is correct, dealer seems confused by my question.

Thanks

Under EU law DRLs are at the front only.

Just to clarify DRL's were not mandatory on the pre LCI model as only cars introduced after a certain date have to have them by EU law.

There is a function to have them on via the I drive .. This does put the rear lights on permanently

You can turn it off .. But you cannot just have the front lights on

Hope this clears up your confusion

Just to clarify the law as to regards to Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) in the EU.

Cars that gained "Type Approval (TA)" after 7th February 2011 must have DRLs that come on when the ignition is switched on, and must not be immobilised in any way. This does not mean the manufactured date of the vehicle!

So Pre LCI X3s were given "TA" before the above date and the DRLs can be switched off. This may be an option in the iDrive depending on the lighting accessories selected on build. My X3 xDrive30d M Sport (63 plate) has the option to disable because "TA" was gained before 7th February 2011.

LCI X3s may have been given "TA", after this date, so they must come on with the ignition. I do not know the answer to this TA date for LCI cars. I think TA was given after the above date.

As far as other manufactures go, there was nothing to stop them voluntarily setting the DRLs to come on before the above date when the ignition is switched on. Naturally it would have been voluntary, so some might be switchable with either rear lights on or off. Remember VOLVO did this voluntarily some years ago. In fact they were the leaders in this field.

I got that option to switch off my daytime lights ('09 F01) although I keep them on all the time. The thing I dislike about new models is that rear lights are off and cant be turned on via the iDrive. Gives an uncompleted look of the car imo.

For all the models after 7th Feb 2011 I have noticed that the rear is off with daytime lights and before that date they were on.

That is because DRLs are now law in the EU (for Type Approval from that date on) and that is the specification agreed by all EU countries. In any event the front DRLs are to ensure that the vehicle is seen from the front in all daylight conditions. They are brighter than the normal side (parking) lights.

If you get your car coded you can turn on the rears as DRL as well
