Hey guys, just had the dreaded serpentine belt failure the other day. I heard it slapping around and shut the car down. I was able to unwrapped the belt from around the crank and get it all freed up. I was about 2 miles from home and I took the major risk of driving back to the house KNOWING all about what happens to these engines when the serpentine belt gets sucked into the crank. I had no other choice and quite frankly I believe I'm very lucky. --

I got to work today waiting for the part to come. I took off the crank pulley to find a few strands of the threading, no actual rubber stuck behind there. But what intrigued me was it looks like my crank seal was indeed being "pushed in" by belt material. There is no oil leak and the seal was not punctured at all. It looks like I am VERY lucky. Attaching a few pics.

My next step I think is gonna be acquiring the tools to replace that seal, which is just a ridiculous price for such a simple job. What do you guys think?

*Edit, want to add I did indeed fix the car today and have driven it 10 miles roughly, all seems well.*

Ignore the first post about the hood. Starting in the second post they talk about aftermarket guards for this. The key point relative to your post is that it seems like that seal should be recessed for N55s, so I'm not sure it's clear that the belt had an impact on it.

Interestingly, some of the aftermarket solutions are made for the seal being recessed:

Seems just as you said, some N55's have a flush seal while the majority DON'T.
