Oil Grade
Good Morning...
Do you guys think it will be ok to use my left over Mercedes Oil (Mobil1 Syn 0W-40) on my '14 X3?.. Mobil1 has BMW LONGLIFE OIL 01 approval I bought 20qtrs at a extremely good price.. but since I have now traded my Merc for a Bimmer... not sure as BMW says I should use Castrol. |

Garage List 2018 M4 Vert [0.00]
2006 Z4M Roadster [0.00] 1995 540i [0.00] 2008 BMW M5 [0.00] 2019 i3 Rex [0.00] 2021 X7 40i MSport [0.00] |
The 2011 manual for the xDrive28i & 35i lists these oil grades... Approved oils belong to the viscosity grades SAE 0W-40, SAE 0W-30, SAE 5W-40 and SAE
5W-30. Assuming it is the same for newer models. Castrol is just BMW's partner. I use to use Mobil1 but have switched to LubriMoly. But your 2014 includes 50k miles of oil changes, unless you want to change more often. |

Bagekko...
Thanks for the info on the oil grades. I change every 5K regardless of BMW recommendation.. I grew up crawling under cars and changing oil every 3K actually when Synthetic was not around yet... I guess the custom stuck with me!. True.. over kill and waste of money probably doing it every 5K. Any particular reason you switched to LubroMoly?. I used to use it on my very own first BMW.. and old '82 320i. |

M1 0W40 European Formula is BMW LL-01 approved and complies with BMW warranty requirements.
In fact - it is highly recommended on bobistheoilguy.com forums. I also stocked up for my X3 35i and use it between the dealership oil changes at 7500 mile intervals with a Mann Filter. Don't forget to get an oil filter wrench assenmacher or equivalent (I got mine at bavauto). |

I switched to LubroMoly/LiquiMoly because the M1 0w-40 was too hard to find, Walmart use to have the 5qt jug but not anymore. I use the 0w-40 TopTech 4100 in my Z3. I use the Racetech 10w-60 in my M5. The only acceptable M5 oils are the LiquiMoly RaceTech or the dealer Castrol. Both LiquiMolys I get in 5L jugs from www.bmaparts.com for a good price shipped. I've used them for all my BMW parts for 15yrs. Its just easiest to get all my stuff from one place.
I hear ya, I doubt I will wait the 15k miles for oil changes on the maint plan for my SO's CPO X3 which has 2 yrs of maint left. Will probably do at 7500 miles though. Quote:
