still disappointed with the mpg

Now had my 2013 X3 28i for a month with 1100 miles on it with 80% local (5 miles one way trip, multiple times per day).

Although on highway 75mph I could get around 25 but the local mpg was really disappointing at 15.This is also confirmed with several tank of gas I refueled (chevron/shell |91|10% ehanol). I did try to drive gently with regular mode but still could not get better. Tried to correlate this with the short local commute which has about ~10 stop/start due to cross roads. But still gets frustrated seeing others easily getting ~20 on local.

Not trying to whine here but just feel a bit sour with the numbers. its a bit far from the spec.

The car drives great but I feel at low speed from start to 50mph the engine has to work hard to accelerate (harder than my other V6 toyota van). it gets peppy once reaches higher speed. wondering maybe I should get the new 328 instead.

Nothing feels wrong, so guess should not bother with dealer on the low mpg. would this still be due to the breakin? any thoughts?

thanks

It's the frequent, short trips that are killing your mpg. If you are constantly hitting traffic and stop lights you will struggle to get over 20 mpg.

Also, as your engine and drive train matures a bit you should see a slight improvement.

If your driving patterns stay pretty consistent you'd be a great candidate for a hybrid. They are great for frequent city commutes.

Your fuel mileage will greatly improve over time. I have 9000kms on mine (don't know how many miles that is) but I've notice mine improve drastically recently. BMW states I should get 11.1L/100km in the city and I am consistently getting that or less.

I think everyone is assuming that the MPG gauge is accurate and properly calibrated. This could account for some of the drastic variances being reported. Anyone run their own calculations over a couple tank fulls?

I'll admit, I've been pretty lazy in regards to manually calculating the MPG. When we got the X3 over a year ago I did do a couple manual calcs and it was relatively close, like within 1 mpg if I remember correctly. I should try it again though just for the heck of it.

After nearly 17000KMs, I get about 12.5L/100KM city and 10L/100KM on the highway.

I'm a bit heavy footed for accelerations heh... but compared to the 22-24L/100KM my old Rainier was getting, ~18MPG is incredible even comparing to the competition!

All of my manual calculations have been +/- 1 mpg. Most of the time, it's been just under the value reported by the trip computer, but YMMV, as they say.

I've had my 2013 28i for about 5 weeks and it has about 2400 miles so far.

I keep track of my MPGs every day on my commute into work (mixture of city and highway). I noticed something interesting the last few days. Yesterday was really hot early in the morning...maybe upper 80's or even 90 when I drove to work. I got 24 MPG on my drive which struck me as a bit low compared to what I had been getting. Then today the weather was much cooler...low 60s when I drove in and I got a solid 28 MPG. Sure it could be the traffic or differences in my driving, but it made me wonder if temperature has an impact on MPGs? OP I see you live in AZ...isn't it like a godzillian degrees there now? Just food for thought.

I am actually thinking the same thing these two days. we have >100F (36C?) recent so I always turn off the auto start/stop feature to make sure AC does not drain battery. I know flights does not like hot air since it degrades the lifts. Not sure how it would impact the efficiency of the turbo engine.

I am actually stop caring the mpg since I can't get any better with it. Now I turn the i-display to the efficient dynamic tab to have fun with when the batt get recharged.

Overall I am pretty happy with my X3 and hybrid was never on my list since my commute is 5miles (10 min) one way. the savings from hybrid would not be significant to offset my other needs. Moreover, US is the cheapest place for me to afford a BMW compared to Asia and EU where I stayed before. In this sense, the fun of driving outweighs all these mpg numbers.

again, thanks for all the inputs from everyone.

That's the attitude I'm in a rental car and I'm obsessed with my mpg because that the only gauge to entertain me.
