Set speed w/cruise control and actual speed
Today I thought I would check the set speed (100km/hr) of the cruise control with a secondary gps (in my BB Phone) and note that the BB GPS indicated 97km/hr.
I'm just wondering if anyone else has a GPS so as to confirm if the factory gps is accurate.

GPS displayed speed can have errors due to number of factors such as no. of satellites locked, inclined roads, signal strengths etc. Dont depend on GPS calculated speeds. |

Speedometers are usually "optimistic" on their read-out. Per my Garmin, I'm 2 MPH slower than what the speedometer says, and 3 MPH slower than what the road side radar signs say (this is at 65 MPH). The radar signs are in the mountains around Redding, Ca., and are used to suggest you slow down to the suggested speed for the oncoming curve. I leave it at 65 and let the ASC decide if I need something less.

Interestingly it was a road side speed sign that got me thinking about the accuracy of the speedo. The Car was registering 3km/h quicker than the sign too in my case.
My wife's acura is reading 5% more than the speedo/odometer. There was a class action law suit against honda/acura which provided 5% additional warranty because of the odometer reading... I'll post a copy for reference when I find it. EDIT: ya, here is the link: http://www.canada-odo-action.ca/ hmm, this brings up another issue. If the BMW over reports speed/mileage the warranty should be adjusted accordingly. Last edited by lbjgh; 06-19-2012 at 10:23 PM.. |

Mine is usually about 2mph difference at 60mph against my tomtom so we all seem to be in the same ballpark

All tachos overread so that they can't be sued for you being done for speeding. My average diff is normally 2mph versus the sat nav at about 30mph up to about 3-4mph at say 70-80mph

I had my roadangel in the car the other day. At 45-50 mph the spedometer was reading 1-2 mph high.
As others have said this is calibrated high to ensure you will be under the indicated speed/speed limit. |

So I guess to my earlier point, does that mean the warranty should be 81,600km or the claimed 80,000kms?
Collectively that is a lot of coverage bmw is not providing.

I would say that this is a "non-issue" (i.e.: "Who Cares?"). Due to differences of a few mm in tyre sizes/diameter between different brands/types, and last but not least tyre wear, the distance on your odo meter will probably also become more inaccurate. So, why bother?

I suppose if your car had a transmission failure at 81k you might care...

Mine is 3 km/h faster than what I am really going, which is 3%.
It is B.S. that they do it on purpose, there is no reason to put a miscalibrated measuring tool anywhere. They would not get sued for going over the speed limit, but I would for sure sue them if my transmission breaks right after warranty. This is why at my next service I will get them to put a note on file saying that the speedo is overeading by 3% and this will protect me a little bit in case. |

Oh the other issue I forgot to mention is for people who might lease the car and go over the permitted mileage... You should only get charged for the mileage in excess of 103% of the odometer reading. Why pay for mileage you did not incur?

Check the odometer against a good standard. Don't go by the speedometer being off by x% and then apply that to the odometer.
The motorcycles I have usually are optimistic on their speed, but oddly, the odometer is pretty accurate. Don't ask me why, I haven't a clue ...

Point taken. The class action law suite I noted above was settled by the manufacturer so their odometers must have been off.

We ditched a 2012 Ford Focus for our X3 and back in January I got a ticket for 86 in 75 zone with my cruise control set at 85 Of course, I was over the limit regardless but in my experience around here at least you don't get ticketed until you are 11 or more above on the freeway. I now stick to no more than 5 over and watch car after car zoom by! |

Are some of you guys serious on the accuracy of the speedometer?
Government regulations are biased not to allow a speedometer to read lower than actual speed. All the tolerance is on the plus side. Each country has it's Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations, which states the test conditions and tolerances. In the UK: Quote:
Don't forget we also have variables, so there is not a constant anyway. Besides the tread depth, pressure, load on the vehicle and tire temperature will be continuously changing the tolerance. From a full car, or even full tank of fuel, to an empty vehicle there will be a change in the tolerance stack up. Even changing tires from approved OEM can change your speedometer accuracy. Do any of you guys know exactly how the tolerance is changing and how close to the true speed or distance you are on each trip? So can you, or the garage calculate the exact mileage at say, an indicated 80K miles? HighlandPete |
