Simple Q... 35i or 3.5i
I've seen several people refer to the 35i as a 3.5 but I've never seen people refer to the 28i as a 2.8.
So, what is correct model designation 35i or 3.5i? |

The 35i nameplate was coined to denote the use of twin-turbos in BMW's N54 3.0 liter I-6 engine (derived from the N52 normally aspirated I-6) when the 335i coupe was released in 2007. Originally, the N52 engine was used with a number of different outputs and nameplates, most notably the 30i. When the N54 was introduced as the 35i, the N52 30i engine was reworked and rebadged as the 28i. The X3 xDrive35i uses an updated version of the N54 called the N55, which utilizes a single turbo twin scroll in place of the N54's twin-turbo setup. The X3 xDrive28i uses a 3.0 liter normally aspirated I-6 (2012 is the final year of this engine's implementation).
If you were to call the 28i the 2.8i, it would mean that the engine had a displacement of 2.8 liters--it is actually a 3.0 liter engine. The same goes for the 35i; it is not a 3.5 liter, rather a 3.0 liter engine. The N52 engine will soon be a thing of the past, as the normally aspirated I-6 is to be replaced by an I-4 2.0 liter single turbo twin scroll engine called the N20. The N20 will take the 28i nameplate. |
