309's Staggered?

Hi All,

I am considering the purchase of a 2011 35i X3. It has the sport activity package with the 309 style wheels. The rears are 9.5" and the fronts are 8.5". The specs for a 2012+ only show one size, 8.5".

Could someone tell me if the 309's on their 2012 or 2013 are staggered? If not, what would be the reason for this change?

This is a great board and it has been very helpful in guiding my purchase. Can't wait to become an X3 driver!

Thanks

you can get them in both. In Canada, you just have to specify that you want the summer tires with the 275 rears. It's just a special order I believe.

My 2011 has the staggered but I understand that 2012 and 2013 are not staggered. Be mindful tire selection is smaller, harder to find, and more expensive with the staggered setup. The car has a strong tendency to under-steer which requires an aggressive amount of throttle to compensate with the larger tires in the back. I plan to switch to the non staggered with my next tire purchase. I'll have better acceleration, better gas mileage, and a more balance car in turns.

The cause of the change after MY2011 probably was reduction of both factory cost of wheels and tires and mpg penalty by eliminating the staggered wheels feature that delivers a significant but not substantial performance benefit on high performance BMW sedans with low center of gravity but is not very useful on the F25. Because I purchased the BMW tire and wheel protection which will replace any appropriate tire brand and model of the same size as the original tires but only the original model, not aftermarket, wheels, I am looking for four Style 309 19x8.5 takeoffs to mount max performance summer tires that I expect to deliver much more benefit to my 2012 35i's sport package handling than the staggered setup with all-season tires. I plan to continue to use the Goodyear LS-2 all-seasons during the four months from mid-November to mid-March and eventually replace them with high performance winter tires.

On UK configurator it still shows 309 as part of M Sport and it comes with mixed size tyres for front and rear.

Thanks for all the information, everyone!

I decided against the 2011 and placed an order for a 2013 instead. The '11 had every option, but some wear and tear. I wasn't wild about the staggered setup on an SUV, either.

For just a bit more cash, I get a new car, only the options I want and all season tires/same size wheels all around.

now if we can just do something about the wait time....
