I stand corrected. I looked at the X3 in 2009 for my wife and they didn't seem to be available then. They are nice seats, particularly when you can have them ventilated and heated as well.

Is it just me, or does the voice-over lady say, "the improved on-road composure, combined with capable off-road crap" (at 0:55)? Or is that "off-road crack"?

but your options will now be (only options in the US right now):

28i:
22/29 (or 23/30) MPG
0-60 ~6.3 seconds

35i:
19/26 MPG
0-60 5.5 seconds

makes it a lot tougher of a decision, loaded the same way I think the 28i will save you $3200 or so. for 2011 you just had to look at price to power because MPG was the same, now you have to look at MPG savings as well, if you drive 12,000 miles per year and get 25 mpg with the 28i vs 22 mpg with the 35i, thats $275 extra per year in gas at current US prices, $1100 over 4 years, so now the cost difference is $4300 between the two engines and their 0-60 times is closer than before.

When I ordered a 2012 X3 28i for my wife the day before yesterday, I was told it would still be the 240 hp six cylinder.

I have since confirmed (via a different dealer and via BMW Customer Service) that the 2012 X3 28i will come with a 4-cylinder turbocharged engine developing 268 horsepower. Yes, I said the 2012 model not 2013!

With that much power in the 28i, maybe they'll have to up the hp a bit on the 35i? Just a guess - I didn't ask about the 35i.
Is that for US market or Canadian?

2012--is BMW Assist still mandatory?

I have one dealer who says it is still mandatory on the 2012s and another dealer that says it isn't? Any guess as to who is right?

Thanks

Darned if I know what she said; but since crack is crap, perhaps it doesn't matter?

I wish we could get a definitive answer about this. Anybody have an ETA on when we'll get the official story?

Obviously BMW now knows what the 2012 28i engine will be, since they will be producing them in a couple of weeks. It seems to me the longer they delay in making the "official" announcement, the more certain it is that it will be a 4-cylinder. If the 2012 28i were to remain as a 6-cylinder, there would be no reason to keep that a secret. I think they want to let the dealers first sell off all of the in-stock 2011's, and finish delivering the remaining 2011 special orders that are still in the pipeline. (Of course that reasoning for the delay is just speculation on my part. However, it is a fact that I have been told by BMW Customer Service and by two dealers that it will be a 4-cylinder.)

Odd, my post disappeared?

Basically it was an article in the Sydney Morning Herald talking about the imminent release of the 20i, same fitout as the 20d and slightly cheaper. Due in Q4 - this from the head of BMW Australia.

The 20i will be 135kw, down from 190kw.

except that by that logic, they would not have announced the Z4 28i engine yet. Dealerships are already taking orders for 2012 X3s and they have to tell the customer what engine they are getting, I would guess the i6 is remaining for this year, until they sell out of inventory and we might even see a mid model year switch to the new engine since their production shows it stops in march 2012.

Some other interesting data points:

BMW has already announced the 528i will get a 4 (update: and 528xi, both available in US), yet it has not yet shown up as certified by CARB. So there's at least one model that's getting the N20 this fall (production starting September or October, I forget) that hasn't made it through California's "federalization" process. That would be encouraging if it weren't for the next paragraph below. Maybe they've just hit some snags in cert and it'll come down to the wire.

The 2012 X3 xDrive 28i has already been certified by CARB with a 3-liter engine. It's certainly possible that they could re-certify with the N20 as well and just not release the 3-liter version, but that just seems unlikely.

2012 X3 production ends in March. It's too early for any kind of facelift, so the only thing that I can think of that makes sense for starting 2013 production in April is a new engine.

X1 intro in the US has been put off until 2013. Could this be because they want to make sure the X3 has the N20 in place before the X1 comes in with the fancy new efficient engine?

Bottom line is despite what 128guy was told I'm pretty sure there's not going to be an engine change this fall. I'd love to be wrong about this, but with the 2012 production run ending in March, tea leaves are pointing to a new engine when the early 2013 production spins up in April. That gives the X3+N20 combo time to gain some momentum before the X1 belatedly shows up in the US.

Just found this the N20 switchover thread with data from Scott26, who knows some stuff. Says the X3 gets the N20 in Q4, which is smack in the middle of the short (7 month) 2012 X3 production run.

Last edited by Penso di no; 09-03-2011 at 03:26 PM.. Reason: Changed "December" to "Q4" to better reflect Scott26's actual quote

That's BS. They have the new prices (my CA sent me the PDF). Invoice numbers are on cars.com. Of course, up here the dealer's stock of '11s is already low so maybe they're a little looser-lipped.

I'm sure that's what it is.....I contacted 5 different BMW Dealers
All offered me 2011 X3's..even though I emailed them my build, they all want me to go see their stock.
My lease is up on my '09 E90 in Dec.
So I still can wait a bit more...by the way I have the PDF Doc. On the info of MY 2012, yet all dealers said prices are not available for the '12 X3...

Can you please post the invoice #s? I want to get verification on these invoice #s. From what I understand, both MACO and destination are included in invoice.

This is what I got:

2012 X3X drive 35i

Wholesale $39,010.00

ZMP $2,730.00

ZPP $3,140.00

ZTP $2,910.00

ZDH $1,185.00

ZCW $635,00

ZPS $865.00

5AC $230.00

6NR $230.00

PAINT $500.00

MACO $450.00

DEST $875.00

I guess this particular dealer has a high MACO.

Regards, -mark
