Noisy in the back?

BIMMERPOST
     Featured on BIMMERPOST.com
I've just had the pleasure of being a passenger in the rear of the car and it is very roomy and comfortable. I did however notice increased "road noise" to the extent that I thought a window may be partially open (which it wasn't). Have any of you noticed this? I wonder if its down to weight reducing measures and leaving out sound deadening materials when manufacturing.

I've noticed it from the driver seat...almost like a rear door isn't fully shut.

Was the cargo cover retracted?

Wasn't there an issue/fix with the window surround from a past thread?

I have noticed it from the drivers seat. Seems like the rear passanger side window isn't shut all the way

I have noticed it as well. Much louder than my old e83 X3. When its raining and the ground is wet the noise is even worse. I would guess lack on insulating materials towards the rear of the vehicle.

I've noticed it. It seems that most of the noise from outside is coming from the right rear passenger door area. I thought it might be some sort of acoustic echo from the sunroof but closing the interior sunroof panel doesn't change anything. It's as if some sort of insulation that is present everywhere else is missing in that area.

I checked it in both positions but no change, not really perceptible from either of the front seats though. If this is a common problem I wonder if anyone has asked BMW to provide an explanation? It is definitely louder than normal road noise. I think I will make some enquiries at the dealer who sold me the car.

Strangely enough that is the side I was sitting in, think I will do some further tests to try gather more information before contacting the dealer.

Good idea. The more people that question it, the better a chance for a solution (e.g. some bulletin issued to dealers to install missing insulation).

The interior trim pieces on the tailgate are grained, hard plastic. It is completely hollow. There is no insulation there--no foam, no paneling, no gaskets, no nothing. Just welding, molding, and screws.

You're absolutely right. That's the spot making intermittent squeak and rattle coming from. Simply can replicate noise by pushing those three trims.

I'll fix it by myself pretty soon and will let you know. Also thinking about this too. Just like F12 door treatment with 3M insulation for the tailgate.

Bottom pic showes someone already did it for the front doors.
