Picked up the X3 yesterday/Question about wheels

Impression on the F25 X3 35i thus far: It drives way better than the E70 X5 4.8i ...heads up display is awesome! The SUV handles pretty well for it's weight and nature. The new keys are enormous.
Option List: Technology, Premium, Exec, M-Sport(2012), BMW Apps, Neveda Leather, Brushed Aluminum Trim, Storage Compartment Package, Heated Rear Seats, Heads-Up Display. Read about my buying experience @ Endras here

Here are some pics.

Question about wheels. I have a set of wheels from my M3 that I'd like to put on the X3. It seems as there is some changes to the center bore. Has anyone any idea whether it would fit or not? Specs are not the issue here, just rather the center bore/bolts. The wheels themselves are 74mm and uses hub rings on the E9X m3; effective center bore with the rings should be 72.56mm.

My winter set-up wheels are bored 74.1 and the Spigot rings you need are 74.1 mm too 72.6mm, they fit fine.

Sounds like it'll fit. Thanks for the info Do you have the offset for your wheels?

The correct offsets for the BMW factory wheels are:

307, 308 & 368 wheels 8JX18 ET43 (42 to 45 recommended range for 8.0 wheels)
309 & 369 wheels (Fronts) 8.5JX19 ET38
309 & 369 wheels (Rears) 9.5JX19 ET48
All, of course, have 72.6 borecentric mounting with a 5X120 BC.

Unlike most other BMW's the F25 chassis uses 14X1.25mm straight-tapered seat bolts instead of the more common 14X1.5mm bolts. The wheel bolt holes are the same, but the bolts obviously won't interchange.

M3 wheels vary with the year, but many have an offset between 30 and 40 mm for typical 8 or 8.5 widths. The 40's are probably OK , but 30's would be hard on the wheel bearings and might have clearance problems.

Thanks for the info. My wheels came off my E92 M3, so I'm going to have very aggressive offsets. I will be test fitting them soon to see if they are too much.

Yeh, the E92's are usually specd at ET23 for 8.5's and ET29 for 9.5's. You may have some fender issues when the suspension compresses and although the bearings will be OK for a while, they won't be real happy with the off-center loading.

However, if they do fit, the wider track should look cool.

Wider rubber at this time of year - a good idea?............not too sure about that myself!

Might be considered to be a 'cool look' down at the mall but in the snow, slush and ice???

Just a thought chaps.

More than reasonable thought.

Wider "track" (the distance between the center-lines of the Left side and right side tires) due to less mounting surface offset in each wheel is independent of the tire width. Of course you're absolutely correct about NOT wanting wide snow tires which will have to "push" more snow out of the way and will have lower surface contact pressure which translates into less "bite" into the remaining snow.

It's possible to have a "wide-track" while still using "narrow" tires.

A X3 with (4) 295/35's all around would be a real handful in soft snow. Anything wider than a 245 on snow is probably self-defeating on the F25 chassis.

Nah, I'd continue using my OEM's for the winter. I'm just planning for spring, to use these now would be stupidity. Now that you point out the specs that you think will have fender issues, I'm even more worried. I have an extremely aggressive set up on my M3(19x8.5 ET15 fronts and 19x10 ET23 rear). I guess only trial and error will tell. I already have the tires and wheels, no harm in slapping them on to try. I'm interested in knowing what you mean by when the suspension compresses. Unless I go off-roading, I'll probably never see enough road camber to compress my suspension to the fender level, right?

Yep 35 ET
The wheels are 18" * 8.5" all round.
This off set of 35 is perfect.

Wrong!......sorry. It is not always necessary to go off road to produce a tyre/bodywork foul point. Consider a loaded vehicle, traveling at speed, a tight corner with an adverse camber, any slight amount of 'confidence' breaking and the nose will dive exaggerating the body roll. At best, tyre and/or bodywork damage is likely; at worst, it could cause the vehicle to become unstable and even roll.

One is best advised to proceed with caution and to remember that the X3 is no M3, even if it does share the same basic engine and platform. Not a lot of point in trying to 'reinvent the wheel'............after all BMW have done that for you, yes?

'Stay safe'......the alternative might well bring tears to your eyes!

I cannot and will not disagree because what you guys say is absolutely true. I'm only considering using my wheel pending the safety and fitment of it on the F25. As I said, I have the wheels and tires, there's no harm in me putting it on and inspecting it visually. I will report back here on how they fit regardless of whether my decision to pursue the use of it or not. I do appreciate and thank you for your insight and advice.

Johnbmw6 - those look great!

Sorry to pour cold water on your enthusiasm - some of us have learned the hard way and are lucky to be able to pass on our concerns. I hope you enjoy your X3 and make the visual impact you desire.

Put the wheel size and off set on here and I will tell you if they will fit or not, simple

M3 = 8.5 * 18 fr ET=29 these will fit good
M3 =9.5 * 18 rr ET =23 these will be 25mm further sticking out

IF those wheel sizes are what you were using on the M3.

beautiful, can't wait for mine now. M3 Rims would look nice but the low offset might make it stick out a bit. You'd have to get some hubcentric rings to ensure the rims stay balanced on the hub... Not particularly a big fan of them to be honest.

Would you be able to take more pics with the rails in better view? How much of a height difference does it make?

Thanks!

A lot of well known quality wheels makers from Japan seems to utilize these rings. I wasn't a fan either, but without any problems, I couldn't complain. By rails do you mean the universal roof support, or the black roof rail that comes with the car? I'll take some pictures over the weekend.
